The bypass valves on the back of tank help in winterizing. By bypassing your not filling your hot water tank with 6 gal. of antifreeze. You remove drain plug thats behind gas line and valve to drain....

I've also done that with my manual . It's crazy...

I've also done that with my manual . It's crazy how you for get some of the simplest things. I also put new a file envelope in manual to put all new purchase and receipts into for quick reference.

Your bypass valves will be on the back side of water tank. similar to but not exactly like photo that I swiped from another post
