I'm thinking that even if I were to fashion something nice
to go up there, that I'd be too scared of it collapsing under an adult weight.

Though I only weigh about 140#....it just doesn't seem...

Nice!

Sounds like you made the most of that space...! Mine doesn't have much of a center section. Just two wide-ish cabinets and maybe only 6" in between them...without making a huge mess of it, probably...

I have a 1988 T-1550, but the Upper Bunk didn't come with any mattress or anything and I can't seem to picture what is supposed to be there.
