Lake Placid Recommendations

Our big trip this year is to Lake Placid with 10 nights at the Whiteface Mountain KOA there. Looking for recommendations of things to do and see from those who have been there. Relaxation is high on the list of "must dos" but we also want to take some car trips throughout the area and don't mind driving all around.

After Lake Placid, we head to Watkins Glen for 3 nights to visit some wineries.

Well Diane be absolutely sure to take the drive to the top of Whiteface Mountain at about 5000 feet above sea level. You do this in your own car and when I went there was no fee...been a while so that may have changed, but everything costs money these days. The drive up is breath-taking and the views from the summit are just spectacular...you'll love this.

Drive over to Ausable Chasm too...this is well advertised so you can easily get details on getting over there...again a beautiful drive over and a spectacular natural exhibit not to be missed when in that area. Highly recommended.

Also note taking your car on the ferry across Lake Champlain to Burlington, Vermont is a great day trip which is again easily accessable to your campground. Burlington has nice shopping and just south of Burlington is Shelburne, VT which has the world famous Shelburne Americana Museum. This is another terific day trip from your camp.

Use a local map to discover more on getting to each of these options. You will love each one I bet. More questions on any of this..just ask.

Bob

Thanks for the suggestions! We are really looking forward to Lake Placid and then we go to Watkins Glen for a few days to explore wine country.

Diane, don't forget to visit Lake Placid village. It's full of great shops and restaurants. Our personal favorite is the Great Adirondack Steak and Seafood. Their lobster bisque is great and they serve a wonder plate of homemade onion rights.

We camp at least 30 days a year at Fish Creek Ponds which is about 40 minutes from Lake Placid so we're fairly comfortable with the area.

The Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake is well worth the drive as is the Wild Center in Tupper Lake. The Visitors Interpretative Center (VIC) at Paul Smith's is pretty neat, too.

Right on the road up to the gate at Whiteface is North Pole, NY and Santa's Workshop. Even us grown up kids enjoy it.

Also, at Whiteface, the ski lift ride in summer is just spectacular.

In Lake Placid, visit all the Olympic facilities. The 1932 ice rink is still there. The ski jumps are just outside of the village and, if you're lucky, you can watch Olympic jumpers practicing there, even in summer.

We'll be at Fish Creek from August 7th to the 18th with email. Drop me a note if you have other questions about the area.

Get the Olympic Sites Passport. Whiteface Lake Placid
$29 lets you drive up Whiteface on the Mt. Veteran's Memorial Highway, A gondola ride up Little Whitface, admission to the Olympic Museum in Lake Placid, The bobsled site with a tour of the track (it's in a bus next to the track), up the 120m ski jump tower. If you watch the schedule they may be jumping. We did that a few years ago.

Exclamation Good Sam's North Pole Campground Lake Placid NY

Well to answer my prior #7 post question.........
I went to the Good Sam's North Pole Campground near Lake Placid and ck'd. out the full hookup sites today. The sites are LARGE wooded & private in one section. The other main section (down the road 2 tenths of a mile) the sites are about average (not large or private) like the KOA in Lake Placid.
I only ck'd the full hookup sites because that's all we are intrested in.

DF5.4....I took your good advice & got the $29. Olympic Sites Passport, great deal..
Thanks,

to Diane...
Wondering now that you have camped at Lake Placid KOA..any thoughts / suggestions ? We are headed there next week.. I read somewhere that sites were awful close to each other... frustrating.. but can't judge until I see it myself.

Any tips / areas to look at while up there ?!

Thanks
Sarah

Sarah,

The sites are large and wooded and there is no feeling of being on top of your neighbor. Lake Placid KOA is a HUGE campground with lots of area to walk around. There is a dog park that is well hidden in the woods but worth finding if you travel with dogs as we do. It was very quiet even full of people over Labor Day weekend last year.

Unless you are lucky enough to get a cable site, TV reception is awful. We found we didn't miss TV at all.

Enjoy your stay!!

Diane

Hi Diane, we are there for 7 nights... have lots of things planned.. but we try to enjoy each day and not over book.... Our son goes to college north of Lake Placid, so we are a little familiar with the area... might explore down town again, see the olympic stuff again, hopefully go fishing somewhere... rent boats on mirror lake, possibly head to Montreal for a day trip.... white water rafting ?? who knows.. so much to do so little time... if you did anything less "touristy"... let us know. Thanks !!

Whiteface Lodge has music entertainment on some weekends so check that out, you won't be far away. Oh by the way, he's my brother Steve so say hi if you see his one man show. Just him and his guitars.
