Hammondsport NY

Since we will not be at Buttonwood this year, we have planned a trip in early April with our friends who live near Buttonwood. The ones we visit when we have attended M&G there. We are meeting up in Hammondsport. Non-camping trip of course. We have been to the Glenn Curtis Museum and want our friends to see it. (This another of Tom's Air Force friends, we know he will love that museum) We have been with them to the Corning Glass Museum and the western art museum in Corning. Other than that, what is there to see and do around there. We will take in a winery of course. We are not opposed to travelling around the lakes to find something interesting to do.

There is a brand-new Best Western in Hammondsport and I think we will stay there. Anyone know of good restaurants in the general area?

This will also get us familiar with Route 88 and we will see how bumpy that really is and if we will feel comfortable travelling it with the camper on way to Ive's Run in July.

Thanks for any help and advice !

I was just looking into the Glen Curtis Museum two days ago for a weekend motorcycle trip. Someone had mentioned it on another board I follow... Was planning on Best Western too, good to know it's new. I'll be watching this thread!

Tom & Debbie,

We’ve visited the Finger Lakes area several times before we bought our Sunline a well as camping with the Sunny at Keuka Lake and Sampson State Park on Seneca Lake. We’ve eaten twice at the Village Tavern in Hammondsport, both times were good but a bit “spendy.” On Keuka Lake, two vineyards we enjoyed were Heron Hill, which has a wonderful view from the tasting room, and Dr. Konstantin Frank, which has a decent view and very good wines. One of our favorite wineries is a quirky little place called MacGregor Vineyards (eastern Keuka Lake).

On Seneca Lake, we had a very good meal at the Wagner Vineyards and, while camping at Sampson SP, a former WWII naval base, we thought that the Naval Base museum there was very interesting. We’ve also been to the Glen Curtis Museum and really enjoyed it. We visited Watkins Glen, both the park and the town, and really enjoyed both. It’s a nice area to visit!

Looking forward to seeing you at Ive’s Run.

Hi Matthew and Lisa,

I just printed off your great post and love some of the ideas. We will likely have a god meal at the Village Tavern at least once in celebration of our yearly get-together with these wonderful friends.

An interesting story. We had heard of the museum at Sampson and the fellows really wanted to see it as it had an Air Force Display as well. We were on a Spring trip (non-camping). (We like to visit before the college graduations as it is crowded and expensive then). One of our good Sunline members and his wife volunteered at Sampson for years. They were good friends with the lady who ran the museum and told her of our impending visit. Despite it not being open for the season yet, we contacted the lady and she met us and let us in. We had the place to ourselves.
The fellows were together though most of their years in the Air Force, but most important, a year in Vietnam. Despite this being a different era, they found a few displays that brought back memories and they had a few emotional moments recalling their service time. Maybe that would not have happened if it was crowded with visitors. A sweet memory.

We look forward to seeing you both as well !

Hammondsport (non-camping visit with friends) was lots of fun. Good restaurants and visits to wineries and even a tour of the local fish hatchery. The Best Western is new and almost across the road from Glenn Curtiss Museum ( a must see if you are in the area). Good breakfast there and that saved us some $$. Route 88 was still so very bad, not just the expansion joints, but huge holes in the blacktop. So we decided to head home on I-90 and will take that when we head out with the camper to Ives Run. It really is not much longer and those routes that go south by each of the Finger Lakes are pleasant.

Thanks for the road report. Route 88 I still feel years back started my camper frame damage. Good idea to take another way back.

Do you recall what area was bad?
