Florida bound.

We're heading to Fla for 2 weeks the end of Feb. Plan to be in the keys for a few days. Any campground suggestions?

The SP in the Florida Keys book up 12 months in advance and the private campgrounds are very expensive. We tried many times to get into the SP and never seem to be fast enough when the booking window opens. What other parts of FL do you plan on visiting. We have camped in a number a places in FL.

May I get in on this, too? We're going to St. Aug Jan. 19th for a few days (state park) then over to Crystal River for a week (Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park). If you have knowledge of any "must see" places near Crystal River, we'd welcome any suggestions.

We're stopping at St Augustine on the way down. May have to scratch the keys. We're planning to go to the Ft Myers, Sarasota area. This will be our first extended trip to Fl, so we are open to any suggestions.

Close to Clermont is Lake Louisa SP. Nice place. But I think there is a 2 week maximum stay at the State Parks.
Must see's near Crystal River depend on what you like. Manatees are the big draw, and if you've never seen them, you should.
Crackers is a nice restaurant with seating out on the dock, and great food. If you like kayaking/canoeing, I could write you a book. Bicycling on the Rails to Trails near Inverness is hard to beat. If you've never seen Rainbow River, and you'd like to rent a boat, I think it's a pretty amazing sight. It's just east of Crystal River in Dunellon. At the very least, visit the State Park at the headsprings.
As you may have guessed, Deb and I are residents of this area, and would be very happy to answer any questions or do any recon that you may need. Perhaps we could get together and do a little Florida 'Meet and Greet'.
And yes, reserving a site in the Keys in the winter is a very difficult endeavor. I have friends who have made an absolute science out of it, and I get to use any days they have 'double booked" !
Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. Except giving up my spot in the Keys in early February!
Tom

After thought...
Harold, the private campgrounds in the Keys may be more expensive than the State Parks, but if it's only a few days, go for it. I prefer the small town feel of the middle keys, but it's all fun to explore. Amid all the tourist traps, there are very fine art and photo galleries. Search the side streets for fish markets, and if you like to paddle or scuba, I could write you another book.

Good for you, Bahia has a good beach and so is Sombrero Beach in Marathon. In Marathon a good place to have lunch is Keys Fisheries. They have a good Lobster Reuben sandwich. The Keys is our favorite place for the winter months. We spent 10 winters there before we bought our Sunline. If you are in Islamorada, Lazy Days is a good place to eat also.

I never knew about Passport America before. Looks like some great discounts. I think I will join before we head south.

Janalee, I see where the Tall Pines you stayed at in Sebring is now under new management. Not sure if they are the same ones that were there the last time you were here, but I'm just saying.

Hope it is not getting so cold for you "up there".

Harold and Sue,

If you're going to be in the area between Sarasota and Ft. Myers, you might want to look at camping at Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey (between Sarasota and Venice). A very nice park with good camping sites and a lot of interesting things to do, especially if you like nature. The beaches in the area between Sarasota and Ft. Myers are very nice and some of the best are not too far from Oscar Scherer. My Mom has a double-wide in Englewood which is just south of Venice and so, if you go to that area and want some recommendations on restaurants, just PM us. Right now, FLA in February sounds great; Mom said yesterday it was in the 70s down there and, of course, it's all of 16 degrees here... and going down!

It was in the mid-60s yesterday where my Mom lives. She's about 3 hours south of Sanford on the west coast - that makes a difference. Anything north of Tampa/Orlando can get cold and the homes in FLA, especially the older ones, are not built for winter temps. The nice thing is FLA temps don't usually stay cold while up here we'll be lucky to see 46 in March. Of course, on Tuesday it's not going to get out of the lower single digits here but that's because of the polar vortex, so we're told. Anyway, I'd change places, if not with you, definitely with my Mom.
