Actually, instead of our usual Clute Park on way home, we are staying a couple of nights at Cowanesque ! Looks very pretty and it is such a deal with the Golden Pass !

Hi Debbie,

Yes, Cowanesque is a really nice park. I wish it was closer.... We were there in the summer of 2011 as Ives was all booked up.While you are there, if you have time, a must see is the Corning Glass Museum. Corning Museum of Glass

We did not really know what to expect and we were literally blown away...by the Museum. You can easily spend an entire day there. Never thought they could do that much with glass... but they have. Everything in glassware all the way to the technology of fiber optics that may have had a big part in saving Corning Glass. A must see if you have time. Not that far from the campground.

Also, a heads up on I-88. Steve said that may have fixed it all, so great!. We were coming out of the lower Hudson valley, went up to I-90 and started traveling west on I-88 at the beginning in Rotterdam. This was in the summer of 2011. I-88 was all new black top starting from the eastern end. I thought, wow they fixed it, great!

But then... about the last 15 miles, it was brutal and not fixed. The concrete pot holes were unbelievable. There was no escaping it either as you could not dodge the holes with all the truck traffic passing in the left lane. Semi's whizzing by and no way you can pull over to get out of the mess. All I could do was slow down some to about 50mph and not create a mega traffic back up. That road did not do our camper any good. Thank goodness it was only the last 15 miles or so. Since it seems they fixed the last part of it, good. Just a heads up, if you find there is not any part left not fixed, slow down is about all you can do and the slower the better. Our camper is longer and heavier than yours so the hard bounce on the back of the camper will be less on yours, but it will still be there. That hard bouncing is not good on a camper.

Hope your trip goes well and safe travels. Beautiful areas.

John

JohnB, thank ! Corning and the glass museum was one of our first trips to meet up (non-camping) with Tom's Air Force buddy and wife who live near Buttonwood. Had a blast. Nice restaurants and a cool little art museum of mostly Western Art, the Rockwell Museum. We had such a horrible experience, like you, on Rt. 88 that we are just going to bypass it. We like I-90 from the Finger Lakes anyway. We jump off at Fonda/Fultonville and go through Saratoga and then Lake George and on home. Familiar and plenty of really good travel plazas (there are online lists if you have a particular brand of gas or fast food you prefer)

An oldie but goodie thread. Same question. How is Route 88 now? We have avoided it all these years by going I 90 West and then camping in the Finger Lakes area for a night or two before crossing into PA. Good times and saw many nice parks in these years. This coming year we cannot take the time to do that and must head directly from Vermont to Ive's Run. So.. we need to take 88. Good news on its current condition anyone?

Debbie, Terry and I came down I88 the end of November with our 3/4 ton Chevy and 16000 5th wheel. I kept a steady 70 to 75 MPH the whole way. There were a couple of rough spots but I just slid over a lane until I was pass the bad section. Chuck and Terry

I live in unadilla. 88 is rougher than a cob above oneonta, then it gets better until that little stretch in Binghamton before you hit rt 81.

Thank you so much. How about decent rest areas? Easy gas access for RVs/trailers in that area? The good thing about I-90 is those rest areas are about every 40 miles along the highway.

There is a truck stop at the Otego exit with a couple choices for fuel, also an easy one at the Harpersville exit only 2 rest areas on 88 both have truck parking.
