i will be traveling in New York. I have an EZ pass for my car. Towing my trailer, do I need to go through a Manned Toll Booth so they can charge the EZ pass for the trailer too???

Since no one has responded, I'll take a jab at it, even though I have no knowledge of using EZ Pass (Michigan has nothing of the sort).
Apparently some states/booths have a way to automatically identify how many axles you have as you go through the booth, but others aren't equipped for this.
Nonetheless, you should see if you can add your trailer plate to your Ez Pass account so it isn't a foreign plate to them. Then, if I were you, just plan the first time you go out to take your pass down, stick it in the foil bag, and go through a toll booth so you can ask and then just pay there then, because otherwise Ez Pass could photograph your trailer and ticket you because it still picked up the car in a non-Ez Pass lane.
We have a number of NYS members here, so hopefully they can comment on how this works. From what I researched though, you certainly have to pay for the trailer and I don't think you can just assume it'll automatically charge you for the trailer too.

We have EZ Pass and it works everywhere we have gone in the northeast. We do not have the TT added on the account but it has always picked up the TT with no problem. We haven't added the TT because of concerns that we could be charged for the TT when not towing. After all, we live in MD where our Governor has never met a tax or fee he didn't like.

Years ago when I first got my pop up, I pulled into a toll booth and tried to pay for the trailer. The attendant looked at me as if I had two heads on my neck. Never did that again. Now I zip through the EZ Pass lane with the trailer in tow.

Looks like you are getting good info here. We have a NY EZ pass (since CT doesn't have one) and we called twice to confirm that you don't have to do anything different the scanner can read and confirm that you are towing. We had planned to get 2 for the truck - one for with and one for without the trailer, but that apparently is not needed and our experiance (no fines) confirms this.

When we went to New Jersey to pick up the fifth wheel for Kitty's son, we used his EZ-pass. It worked perfectly every time. Both towing and not towing.

OK - we live in New York and we have "white" tag for trucks and we have a 'BLUE" tag for the truck and trailer......as a matter of fact, we just got a new BLUE tag for Leo's utility trailer!

Things like that are soo odd. That was what we wanted to do and they talked us out of it.

I just talked with an NYS Thruway Toll operator and got the real scoop. You should go through a manned booth with the ezpass when entering the Thruway when you are pulling a trailer. There is an alarm that will notify tie attendant that you have an ezpass and they will adjust the toll for your trailer. It is not imparitive that you do this on entering the Thruway but it is important that you go through a manned booth when you exit.

There is a lot of confusion and I don"t get the same answer twice. As long as they say I have to stop when towing I've always bagged the E-Z pass, picked up a ticket, and paid the toll at the other end.

EZ Pass
We also have a blue pass when we tow the trailer. Why have an EZPass if you have to stop at the end?? As long as you don't use the wrong pass there's no problem. EZPass is not just New York--we've used it all up and down the East Coast. If you are using a regular pass you are not paying for your extra axles when towing your Sunny.......

We were told that the toll equiptment can tell what you are towing, hence no need for a seperate pass - we asked, they wouldn't give us a second pass. Our last trip we paid dozens of tolls in OH, IN, IL and NY and they all seem to have correctly charged us for the trailer.

I can only speak about my experience with New Hampshire and Maine. I have a single EZpass issued by Rhode Island with no monthly fee, unlike some states. I always use the EZpass only lanes and in NH and Maine it always knows when I am towing. Well, ... twice the Maine Turnpike missed my Sunny at only one toll plaza in the last 3 years.

ok heres the verdict. I went through the EZPass on the MY thruway. You need to go through a Manned booth when entering and exiting the highway.

As I stated above we use the blue tag when towing and WE DO NOT go to a manned both!

Off topic, but am I the only one who is annoyed by toll booths?
On the surface, they seem efficient. The people using the roads are the ones who pay for it. On the other hand, nothing drives me more crazy than slowing down from 65mph to zero, with my 14k pound loaded trailer, only to sit in line so I can pay money, so I can burn another gallon of diesel fuel to get back up to 65mph.
Seems inefficient, and an environmentalists nightmare.

Jeff, more states need "open road tolls" like Rt 95 through New Hampshire. They have 2 lanes where you stay at 65 mph through the tolls with EZpass. In Maine I still have to slow to 10 mph through the EZpass only lanes but they are only at the on/off ramps and one at the beginning and end of the Maine Turnpike.

I agree. It doesn't help that we just aren't used to them either...
A couple years ago when I went up to see Pat and Cindy in Cedar Key from my grandparents' place, I had to go up by the coast around Tampa, and it was a toll road. In many places, the road went seemingly through the middle of nowhere, but they'd have a toll booth. However, the toll booth was just part of the road, and there were two lanes that went around the booths, completely unobstructed, not even a roof. Like, NH, those with Sunpass could just zoom right on by without flinching.
Now why they have multiple toll booths along a stretch of highway, only a couple miles apart, is beyond me.
