East-West Route Around Cleveland?

It’s been a few years since I’ve traveled around Cleveland, OH, heading from NY west through Ohio.

Any suggestions on what may be the best route to take around Cleveland?

I will be pulling the trailer and don’t feel like taking I-90 through the city.

I'm thinking about taking I-90 to I-271 South to I-480 West to I-80 West.
How is I-480 if I happen to hit it around rush hour?

Not sure of the time of day we may be traveling through this area, could be any time between mid-afternoon to early evening.

Thanks in advance for your replies and suggestions.
Hutch

Ohio

I didn't note your end destination.

We generally avoid Ohio but have crossed it a few times. We always avoid Cleveland and Chicago frequently cutting across Ontario avoiding Ohio and Illinois altogether.

When we drive thru Ohio we usually dive down to I80 from Erie taking I79 to I80 West. From there we head down I71 to Columbus.

As well we have stayed at some full hookup state parks in Ohio that gave Passport rates.

Safe Travels,

Hi Hutch

This much I can tell you as I have pulled the camper thru this part at least.

I90 west out of PA is no problem.
I90 west to I271 south is not a problem either.

Now here I don’t know about the I480 west by pass. Never been on that one. Maybe some from the area will know better.

An option although a bit longer is I27I south to I80/90 and then take the Ohio turnpike west all the way across the top of the state. While the turn pike has truck traffic it has never been a problem for us towing the big or little camper on it.

We take I271 south to I71 south towards Columbus all the time. No issues there.

John

Pulling tt should be $22 E-Z Pass/$30 non E-Z Pass.

Toll Fees in NY

Any one know what the toll fees are on I90 thru upper NY? I'm from out west and we have "free" ways.

Joe

Joe

If your coming across northern Ohio from IN on I80/90 it is toll from IN to about the west side of Cleveland where I80 and I90 split. Then I 90 thur the rest of Ohio and thru PA are “free” Then when you hit the NYS state line, I 90 (NYS Thruway) you get a toll until the Buffalo area. It is “free” thru Buffalo complete with some “free” pot holes in concrete. Then once on the eastern end of Buffalo the thruway turns toll again all the way to New York city but I 90 and I 87 split at Albany and I 87 is the toll road to NYC. I 90 keeps going east out of Albany free to MA. If I remember it was called the Berkshire spur.

I’m sure a fellow present day New Yorker may know the tolls or the NYS web site that tells them but where about will you head north off of I 90 to go upstate? If you want to know the toll they need to know what exit or town area you are heading upstate at. If you are going all the way to Albany, I 87 north out of Albany (the north way) use to be free. The Thruway goes from I 90 east/west to Albany then turns to I 87 south at Albany to NYC.

Here in the east , we drive on “Parkways” and park on “Driveways”. Some how I think your “Free” ways are billed thru something else. I have yet to see anything “free” that contains blacktop or concrete and considered public transportation….LOL

Here is the Ohio portion http://ohioturnpike.org/about/history/ Click on Fare/mileage calculator to get the Ohio I80/90 part.

Hope this helps

John

We just came back from Elkhart Indiana on Saturday following I80 through Ohio and then following I90 though Cleveland stopping at the KOSA in Westfield NY for the night.

I can tell you that I80 is a great toll road with lots of service centres with specific parking areas setup just for RV's. I90 was also okay for travelling on and passing through Cleveland was no worse than driving through Buffalo on I90 or Rochester on I490.

There are two section of I90 under construction west of Cleveland. If coming heading west bound you will run into the first 15 mile stretch at the exit to route 193/84 and the second 15 mile stretch is just past the exit for route 534.

Hope this helps.
