Florida Ft. Myers area anyone snowbird there?
We are planning to Snowbird this year in Florida. Want to stay warm so we figured Ft. Myers area would be warm. Anything North would be colder. Any suggestions in that area or any other areas.
Thanks

Rooty,
My grandparents live in Ft. Myers. We've parked our MH at Gulf Waters RV resort in Ft. Myers. We always stay with them, so we've used it just as a parking spot, but the park is very nice. Plenty of ammenities too. Paved sites and green grass. Within a few minutes of Ft. Myers Beach, but not right in the middle of everything. It's a relatively new park too, within 10 years old.
Jon
P.S. I think I remember a '96 Sunline parked at a storage lot across the street!

Being a Florida resident I can add a little insight. Weather is about the same from Tampa south. It isnt much warmer in Ft myers in the winter. Not as much congestion in Ft Myers as Tampa or Orlando. Much shorter drive to the Keys (worth the drive)

We stayed in the Rock Crusher Campground in HomoSassa Springs/Crystal River area last year for most of February.
It's a full service campground with heated pool, washer and Dryers, full hook-ups and every other ammenity you could ask for. The local area is nice for Kayaking, Manatee viewing and planty of other out door activities.
I'd recommend it, but it's pricey compared to central Florida. We stayed at a Ocala State Park for a few nights for $6 a night, with no hook-ups. You could outfit yourself with a solar set up and a few batteries and pay it off in one season.
Since the Hurricane went through South Florida and the Keys a few years back, most of the South Florida Campgrounds were still under construction last year when we were there. Another great campground in Lake Worth on the East Coast side is John Prince Park Campground. It was also a great place to stay, and had everything you would need and is in the middle of a ton of things to keep you busy.
Have fun!!
Pat

We have camped several times at Red Coconut Campground. It is right on the beach, or you can have a site just across the street. Both areas are very congested, and we found the staff to be unfriendly at times. We also find it to be very expensive (last time I checked, it was $1700/month) so we would prefer to spend our money elsewhere. Also, the traffic is unbelievable! If you do not leave by 10 am, you might as well stay home til 8 pm - bumper to bumper traffic. Get a bike!

For Comparison
We primarily stay at three campgrounds in Florida, the Escapee Park at Sumter Oaks in Bushnell, about $300 per month, The Escapee Park in Wauchula, under $400 a month and at Seven Oaks, a private park in Hudson 20 miles north of Tampa that's about $450 a month. These prices match the monthly taxes on my summer home, really good deals.
It is possible to find reasonable camping in FL. Though some spots are fancier, generally the people are nice everywhere we stop, Hudson is one of our favorites because a lot of people we've met over the years now spend the winter there.
The Resort in Wauchula is a beautiful park that we plan to make our FL home base in a couple of years. Escapees can get on a list there to purchase a site for $7000+. When you no longer want it you get your money back. When you don't use it they rent your spot and apply it to the yearly fees, about $1000 a year. (We've been on the list for a spot for four years, plan ahead.)
I will say the prices are lower in central and northern FL. As well no matter where you stay in Florida, there is more to do than you can do, more really good fresh fruits and vegtables than a northern boy can imagine. If your a golfer the prices north of Tampa area can be 1/3rd of the Naples area.
Florida is a very interesting and diverse state, There are many very interesting out of the way small towns, we love rural FL.
