Relocating to SC
We are planning on relocating to South Carolina around July 2012. With that in mind, we are looking for some input on a place to camp next spring as a home base to find a home . We are trying to stay away from the coast and prefer the area west of Columbia. Our plan is to sell our home here in upstate NY, and clear enough to buy a foreclosed / bankowned home out right and not carry a mortgage. Any reccomendations would be appreciated.
Jeff

We use to live in Fort Mill, SC, just South of Charlotte, NC. We would stay at State parks and liked most of them. Anywhere around Columbia makes the rest of the state almost a day trip away.
We liked the Fort Mill area because we could have country living with big city conveniences of Charlotte which was only a twenty minute ride. Charlotte was also pretty much recession proof since the job market is so varied.
We did live in myrtle Beach for awhile, back when it was a weekend tourist trap. Now it has grown so much we don't even pass through it on the way to somewhere else but it does have a Camping World.

I live in upstate New York but have been traveling to Greenville, SC about every 3 or 4 weeks for business for the past year. What a nice area ! Year 'round camping, yahoo. I'm jealous.

Update 2012
Well... we did it, we spent 7 days in our future home state of South Carolina. We decided to stay at a hotel rather than take the trailer, i am glad we did as the second half of the ride home was "interesting" with a High Wind Advisory and white out conditions on I-88 in NY. That was an experience ! We looked at several homes and different towns in the Low Country and decided on an area where we will look once we get there. We spent a day in Charleston and just can't wait to get back to spend a day walking and seeing so much more ! If all goes as planned and we have our home here in NY under contract by May 1st, we will be there by the end of June. Thursday it actually reached 80 degrees..... we used the a/c in the Jeep !!!! We are so excited to go back!!

Hey Gary !
We made it, had a great time on the trip down(took 3 days with 2 vehicles and the truck/trailer loaded) and spent about a month house hunting. We found a good deal on a house on Zillow.com and closed by the end of July 2012. The best part is we are totally debt free and are really loving SC. The State Parks are awesome and we have enjoyed our visits to them...... especially Hunting Island, that was a treat. Living close to the coast is different than Upstate NY, we enjoy it and have no regrets. Home owners insurance and auto insurance can be costly, but that comes with the territory.
We lived in our trailer for 9 weeks total, from after closing on the home in NY to closing on our home in SC. Between my wife, son, myself, and our dogs we were packed in pretty tight in the T-2053 so we didn't get out camping for a while. It was a blast...... sometimes my wife and I still say to each other "we did it" ! After completely renovating our house, I started the search for a job and landed a good job working on two islands with an ocean view every say of the week
We are looking forward to camping in south much more...... National Forest, COE Campgrounds etc. I haven't been on the SOC website much, but today has been a chilly one here. We stayed indoors, it didn't get more that 40 degrees. I guess we will have a fire in the fireplace tonight

Thanks Jeff/Becky!
We're hoping to be down there, this summer. Having just had knee surgery last week, things are moving slowly. Angie has a job, with a company based in Mt. Pleasant, so we will be looking for something close to Charleston.
Where are you living in SC now?

We are about 12 miles outside of Charleston in Hollywood. James Island County Park is very nice, we have been to the park biking several times, and always do a ride through the campground. It seems very clean and well laid out. North of Mt. Pleasant off Hwy. 17 is a US Forest Service Campground- Buck Hall Recreation Area. We also did a ride through there and will have to go back for a weekend this spring.

We're coming down that way, this weekend. We are staying at Lake Aire RV park. It's on Hwy 162 in Hollywood.. Angie has some training in Mt. Pleasant, all next week.

Hi Gary and Angie,
Good luck on the house hunting. I hope the knee surgery went well and the recovery goes well, too.
Good luck and take care.
Jeff and Becky,
Hope you guys weathered the recent storms ok.
Good luck, all.
