Personal Comments: I was going to fill out the whole form as per the posting guidlines but for this type of State Campground, it was not the most efficient way to get the information accross.
Alexander springs is one of several state parks in the Ocala national forest that feature a fresh water spring. The most popular (Especialy with RV'ers) is Salt Springs. Alexander Springs is farther out of the way and far less built up than Salt Springs. I have been to all of the Springs at the state parks there and prefer Alexander Springs by far.
Whereas Salt Springs has man made walls on all sides of the natural spring creating a pool-like experience, Alexander Springs has one wall at the entry point to the water's edge far from the actual spring. This makes for a nice safe spot for kids and keeps the actual spring undisturbed for those of us that like to snorkel. If you head down in the morning (and aren't too afraid to hear the gators down river) you can experience and abundance of fish and turtles in the water. You can of course also canoe down river but we had a somewhat troubling close encounter with a VERY large gator and won't do that again with the kids.
Now for the campground. This is NOT a full hookup camp area. However, there is a dump station and every loop has a potable water spigot near the bathroom/showerhouse. We have previously only tent camped here but have seen plenty of travel trailers. One even used their contractor grade generator all day. That is not the norm, they were just rather inconsiderate untill a group of us educated them in manners. Different campsites have different lengths for the paved driveway. They report all parking pads as level but my memory contradicts this. If you cannot fit your TV and TT on the parking pad, there are plenty of extra parking slots along the loop. All sites are wooded and most are nicely isolated.
Try to get on loop B as there is a nice short path to walk to the day area. Reservations are usefull but we have never had a problem getting a walkup site. This is a benefit of this park being less known and out of the way. Having said that, this park is VERY far from any grocery store or pretty much any store period. Although there is a small park store at the day area, you will want to make sure you have whatever you need before you get there. Also, it can get VERY hot in the summer and there is no electrical. The cool spring water is a welcome refresher during the day but at night, 12v fans or a quiet genset are a must in the hot months.
So, if you enjoy nature and snorkling without bumping into other people constantly, Alexander Springs wins hands down in Ocala. Also, there is so much to do and see in the surrounding area especialy if you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
