NM - Cimarron Canyon State Park

Cimarron Canyon SP is just East of Red River, Eagle Nest, and Angel Fire, NM. Elevation is in the neighborhood of 8,000'. Their campgrounds are "no hookups", but have restroom facilities at each CG. They have excellent CG hosts at each of the three campgrounds: Ponderosa, Maverick, and Tolby.

The Cimarron River runs through (or next to) Ponderosa and Tolby, and trout fishing is popular and productive here. There is a lake next to Maverick. Ponderosa is open to the sky, and the other two have lots of trees and shade.

Worth a look if you're traveling in/through the area. We spent the Labor Day weekend there, and were very pleased with it.

I had to look up to make sure I had the right area, yup it is. I have backpacked that area twice, 2001 and 2003 just down the road from where you stayed.

About Philmont

That is a beautiful area that I will never forget or my son. There is nothing like that back east here. You can actually do map and compass and triangulate mountain ranges miles away... Back east here everything is so on top of everything and it is hard to see several mountain ranges all at the same time. There is a few spots, but not many.

On our list of things to do, is get the camper out in that area.

Thanks for the link.

John

Did you have a chance to check out the St. James Hotel, John?
I've never seen it, but want to when we have more time up there.

No, but I for sure heard about it. St. James Hotel & Restaurant

And check out the Paranormal... St. James Hotel & Restaurant

Will have to make a point of seeing it the next time we are there

The first trip I had about 15 teenagers to keep track of... the second time I had a few more... Also the memory of, I had 15 Scouts and 5 Dad's leaving Albuquerque around August 28, 2001. If we where 2 weeks later coming off the trail we would of run right into the Sept. 11th airport shutdowns. Would of been stranded with 15 teens for a week trying to get home. Would of headed back to the ranch...

JohnB, my son has been to Philmont as a Scout and he would pretty much agree with your feelings about the scenery. I know the pictures he took were amazing.
