Personal Comments:
Another wonderful National Forest Campground. This one is right off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and has it's own hiking and mountain biking trails. The lake was clean and warm when we were there. They don't take reservations, so don't show up on a friday or saturday and expect to get a site. They only had no electric sites left when we showed up on a thursday afternoon and only 3 no hookup sites that we could fit into. There were a dozen available tent sites, but they are mostly walk-ins, so not RV friendly. The easiest way to get there is to take the exit off of I64 and come down from the north. Our first time here we came up from I81, through Vesuvius, VA - big mistake, even though we had our popup at that time. Unfortunately this place has been discovered. You used to be able to arrive here on a thursday and get an electric site with no problems. This year (2007) by friday night there wasn't a single open site - tent or electric. Now they tell me that you need to come in on a tuesday or wednesday to be assured you'll get an electric site.

Sherando Lake

We just returned from a few days there. Stayed in site C10 along the creek. Very nice campground with electric hookups. We try not to go camping in the summer and avoid weekends to miss the crowds. Campground was not crowded at all. Mostly retired folks. Would like to go back next fall maybe right after school goes back while it's still warm enough to go swimming.

Beware of the last weekend of September. The Great Eastern Endurance Run starts and ends at the Sherando Campground and the campground is packed by thursday. (the electric sites anyway) It's fun to watch the runners come in. In 2008 they ran right by our site. The race starts at 6:00 a.m. with a 19 hour time limit. Since there are half marathoners, 50K, and 100K runners, people (crazy people if you know the terrain) are running by the campsite for a loooong time. The year it's Sept 25, 2010.
