Pennsylvania Grand Canyon
OK, whos' been there, done that ? Is this an area to spend 8 - 10 days ?
Well, we currently have reservations to be in Pigeon Forge, TN from July 3 - 10. But, we are now thinking that we'd like to cut the travel distance down. PF is about 425 miles, so approx 1/2 that would be really nice.
Any suggestions for someplace within 200 - 250 miles of Martinsburg, WV would be greatly appreciated.
Anyone going somewhere that we we might be able to join them, mini Sunline Rally

Kitty,
We did the PA canyon last July. Stayed in Leonard Harrison State Park, which had a small campground right on the gorge. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, and there's a rails-to-trails bike trail along the base of the gorge that was fun to ride.
We were there for two days and for me that was enough. It was amazing to see, but once I saw it and we rode the trail for a few hours, I was starting to get a little bored. There may be more to do in that area, but I didn't see a whole lot that interested me.
Of course, your milage may vary. I will say that the park and campground were in excellent condition, and that everybody should see the canyon at least once!
Pictures here if you are interested: Leonard Harrison State Park 7/7/09
- Frank
PS. If you two wind up heading north into the PA area, let me know. We might be able to head out and meet up even if it's only for a day.

If you like to hike, bicycle, and kayak it's a great place to vacation. If not, I'm not sure there's enough to do. We love Ives Run Campground. One of the state parks up there doesn't take dogs, so be aware of that. Wellsboro is a great little town with cute shops and some nice restaurants. We didn't make it into Mansfield. The 4th of July fireworks at Ives Run are amazing.

How about the area around Altoona. That would be right up Gary's alley.
Wright's Campground
Check out the What's nearby link. Also close to Horseshoe Curve

Friends of ours went up to the Pa Grand Canyon and stayed here Stony Fork Creek Campground
They are a little picky and said this was a very nice campground.

Thanks for all the ideas. Depending on whether or not Gary's truck is fixed will determine "if" we get to go anywhere as my truck is not set up to tow yes ! TOO many darn "gotta do" things interfering with our Sunline time. Gary dies really like the Horseshoe curve idea.

As I posted in another thread on this area, I grew up in Wellsboro, PA, and know the area well. I'm very proud of it, and my folks still live there. If I can provide any information, please feel free to contact me about it.

I know this is an old post, but just returned from this area.
There is lots to see, but you will need to drive some to get there.
The plus side is all the drives are scenic with no traffic and if like twisties cant go wrong.
We use Ole Bull SP as base and recommend the following in no particular order
PA Grand Canyon
Hyner view lookout
Kinzua Bridge w/ visitors center
Elk county visitor center and viewing areas
Austin dam ruins

Hi Kitty
If you are ever back in the area there are multiple camp grounds near Altoona. Raystown Lake is a big attraction. It's the largest man-made body of water east of the Mississippi. Trough Creek state park has plenty around. Miles of back roads to ride bikes, balanced rock which is pretty decent and the ice mine. Most of the year there is ice in it. Nothing huge to walk in just amazing to see ice in nature in July. Altoona has the horseshoe curve rail road and Johnstown which is a little drive away from Altoona has the incline plane. Greenwood Furnace State Park is a nice campground and they typically have some type of activity at the blacksmith shop. Of course right now covid19 tends to put a damper on things.

Hi Roger,
I know you may not have realized this, just so you know. Miss Kitty passed away in the 2012 time frame. Many of us knew her personally, myself included, and we truly miss her. Her posts still live on here on Sunline Owners Club. She had the record I do believe for the most owned Sunlines here in the Club.
Thanks for posting on the camping. Always interesting to know.
Thanks,
John

Roger,
No worries, you are totally innocent in all this and we truly appreciate your kind thoughts. FYI, Here is a post by her husband Gary, the summer before the cancer totally took over later that year. This was a great day for Kitty and Gary.

No one said you had to get rid of one!
I've successfully had one from all four main decades that Sunline was in production, and all four decades that trailers were produced. In addition to finding my first again, I'd also like to find a pre '77 trailer since those looked a bit different and are more rare.

Oh I'm not getting rid of it. Would just be hard pressed to explain to the wife why we would need more than one camper lol
