Personal Comments:
I have lived near here for up to 45 years and never knew exactly what existed on this spot. The old bridge that used to be here was a great fishing place. If you fish, the Tionesta river is for you. Carp the size of busses, catfish the size of buicks, and bass that taunt you. This place sits at the confluence of forest road 147 and pa rt 666 (but its not evil.). If you go up the forest road (graded gravel, multi use) you can get to Marienville Pa and the ANF after a fashion. Beware of log trucks and resource trucks of some sort - there are oil and gas wells hidden all in this forest and you do not see them until you are on them. This campground is a middle point of a twice yearly ATV ride thru the ANF (called the 'Tour de Forest' - google that and Marienville) I have passed by this hundreds of times and only this summer actually drove back into the campground.
you dont see the 'guard shack' until halfway thru it, due to budget cutbacks it is no longer reliably manned. the flush toilet house is only open from after last frost to first frost, same for the potable water.
site 6 is the hot site - it abuts a gentle grade to the river.
of note: during spring melt or 'really bad summer storms', the tionesta turns to chocolate milk but does not threaten the campground. however, the 100 year flood (of which we had 4 in the 20th century) will get it.
there are 2 lights - a small cfl bulb outside the guard shack where the self registration is, and the spilled light from the toilet house. otherwise when the scare lights go off, you are about as in the dark as you will ever be. coyotes, bear, deer and everything furry abound, but campers rarely get eaten.
It closes after deer season and stays that way 'till trout season.
Im going back 3 weekends in a row starting the 24th of sept thats how impressed I am and we have applied to 'host' it next summer...(the ACoE has developed a campground hosting program nationwide since there is no $$$ in the budget)
