Caledonia State Park

Does anyone have any info on Caledona State Park outside of Chambersburg, PA? It looks like a place with lots to do and just wandering if anyone has ever been there before. Thanks for your help.

Hi Dave and Sue -

I am from Chambersburg...and have been to the state park many times...but I've never camped there. There is a lot to do in Chambersburg and surrounding areas...especially Gettysburg...about 30 minutes from Caledonia. You might want to PM PoorManCampin'...he is also from Chambersburg and I believe has camped there.

Dave:

Caledonia has two campgrounds. We stay in Hosack Run which is the older campground along the creek. This campground is completely pet friendly. The newer, larger campground up on the hill is more kids friendly with the pool and few (if any) pet sites. If you stay in Hosack Run, you will need reservations. I believe site 170 is the one that is very tight and difficult to back your trailer due to the culvert construction for storm drainage.

If you enjoy history, the park is the site of Thadeous Stevens' ironworks. There is a self-guided hiking trail that shows locations of the original iron furnace and resources required for making iron from ore using charcoal as the heat source. You can get maps of the trails at the park office.

As Rich stated, you would be a short drive from Gettysburg and the battlefield. If you're into antiques, there are a number of shops in the Gettysburg/Chambersburg area. If you enjoy fishing, the stream and pond at the park are stocked with trout.

I'm sure you will find something to catch your interest in the area.

OK, it's hot HOT HOT and I'm out working in a storage shed, Gary is trying to replace a bad injector in his truck and I just came in for a drink & a break. Anyone got links to these places ?? We are thinking about trying to get away next weekend "IF" truck co-operates.

The problem with PA state parks is the limited number of sites for campers who have pets. When we go camping there are almost always sites available in the "no pets" areas

Poor Man Campin'
Hey Dave!

Sent you a pm w/my recommendations. Good luck! Lots to do in the area; Gettysburg Battlefield, Adams County Wineries, 4 or 5 golf courses, Appalachian Trail, and lots of good food in the area. Or best of all, hang out at the campsite and do nothing! Whatever you do, hope your weather is good and you and your friends have a great time! Any specific questions let me know and I'll try to help you out! Take care!

Just an update on Caledonia SP: We stayed Monday through Wednesday of this past week at the Chinquapin Hill CG, which is predominantly a tent campground with a few RV sites. It is Caledonia's "no pet" CG. We were in site #53, which was a nice, end-of-row site. There was some road noise from Route 30 but most of the time it was pretty quiet. The bath houses and lavatories are older, however, the camp host said that they are going to be building new ones. A week after the big 150th anniversary of Gettysburg the CG was sparsely filled but the host told us that the previous week it was full. What Brad wrote in reply #9 still holds true for the area - we were there because we were taking a class at the Seminary and wanted to stay out-of-town b/c of all the tourists - what better excuse to go camping!
