That's what I was afraid of. There's probably a way to rewind the spring, but I'm not familiar with that kind of awning to know exactly how. Can you post a pic of the ends of the awning tube?

Ok. The typical A&E brand awning has the end caps attached to the tube springs, so as soon as you unbolt an end cap and pull it out of the side arm, it could still be under some spring tension, which could hurt you. You have to be careful when winding it because it could come loose from you and snap back, hard.

i tore it apart today and found both springs broke where they screw onto the collar,so i removed the broken ends and screwed the springs back onto the collar. i know it will not be a permanent fix,but am hoping it will last the season. i wanna thank you all for the helpful advice.

Hmm, ok. If I'm envisioning it correctly, it seems like that should be a decent fix for a while. Hopefully it lasts.
I'm not sure where you could find a replacement one, maybe from an RV salvage place like Arizona RV Salvage. Unfortunately I don't know of any around PA, they're mostly out west.

It has two 36 inch springs on both ends of the awning inside the tube. they screw onto a collar. we just removed the pieces that were broken which were on the ends where they were threaded on the collar, about 2inches and screwed the rest of the spring back on which were about 34 inches long so we lost 2 inches and had to put a lil more tension on the spring to screw it back on.

That just might last a while then. But if you do have to replace them, you should see if you could make some A&E springs work. Very common and hopefully easy to find.
