5th Wheel- any for sale near Upstate NY?

Not sure when they stopped making 5th wheels, for sun line. Need to tow with my Dodge 1500 4.7L so looking for lightweight options, thought 5th wheel better than trailer. welcome input from you experience Sunliners. Thanks, Mcm

The last year Sunline made the fifth wheel line was in 2003, however you could still custom order one in 2005. We just traded our F311 unit in on a new Grand Design Solitude model here in Ontario.

The Sunline 5th wheels are heavy units and have a heavy tongue weight. We towed ours with a 3/4 ton diesel truck and we almost maxed out our rear axle rating on our truck. I am sorry to tell you, but you are not going to be able to tow one the 2002 to 2005 model years with a 1500 pickup truck and especially one with only a 4.7L engine. You are going to be overloading your truck and really putting a strain on the engine.

If you are still set on getting a Sunline 5th wheel, you are going to have to either get a larger truck, a 3/4 ton minimum or preferably a one ton unit and I would strongly suggest a diesel in order not to put a strain on the engine when go though any mountain areas. Your other option would be to look at the gooseneck unit produced back in the early 80's.

I hope this information helps.

We had a 1500 off-road with a 5.2 (318ci) V-8 when we purchased our T-276SR. Not a fiver, but it was totally maxed out. This is a truck that will pull just about anything as long as you don't need to go over 45 mph. It pulled out an F350, an Expedition, and an F150 that was in a ditch, all chained together, on a snow covered farm lane.

Sunlines were known to be heavy for their size, a 3/4 ton diesel is the minimum for a Sunny Fiver.

FYI - We pull ours with a '04 Dodge 2500 4x4 crew cab with the Cummins Diesel now.

Sunline exited the fifth wheel market from 1997-2001. You should be able to find a fifth wheel to work with your truck if it was built before 1996. They were much lighter and smaller than the 2002/03 redesigns. The single axle F-1850 gooseneck was a common small fifth wheel capable of being towed with a small truck, smaller than your 1500.
