Chances are the cooling unit had a part of the coils rust out, causing the leak. I don't know much about refrigeration either, so I'm not sure if it could just be welded shut and recharged. I do know you could either buy a new refrigerator, or for part of the cost, you could have a new cooling unit put on the old one.
If you do end up getting a new one, just a heads up, pull the trim off the door of the old one and slide the wood panel (with handle) out. Then you can install it the same way on the new refrigerator to make it look factory still.
