You are correct, the CD player was optional at the time, and a somewhat rare option too, considering today's standards. I'd say somewhere between 25 and 35% of them had the CD player option.

However, the CD player was a separate unit. The radio unit was identical. The CD player unit was the same size as the radio unit, or at least the face. In the area they installed the radio, they'd not have the decorative panels on either side of the radio and they'd move it all the way to the left side. Then the CD player would fit right in next to it.

I'll go look for a pic, so you can see what I'm talking about.

Finding a unit like this will be difficult. You could try eBay, but I'm not sure how many other brands used them to have an idea of how many would be in the market.

However, if you can find a plug in CD player somewhere, the rear of the radio should just have normal standard plug ins that you could connect it in and just store it in the cabinet below.

Hmm, I guess the CD player option was rarer than I thought. Of the maybe 125 I have pics for, some didn't have pics showing the radio, but those that did, only about six or seven had the CD player option.

Here are the the better pics...

Here's one, actually a 2970, that was modified like I was saying. Honest I didn't see this before the last post...

I do actually have some good news for you. I happened to go through some pics and found a set of a '97 1950 without the CD player. I took a series of pictures of everything in the owner's manual. Of all the manuals in the book, I happened to only take a pic of the manual for that radio. It's a good thing because the Appliance ID only said Encore. So found a make of the radio now. I was able to Google it and I found an original style CD player for you. Only thing is it's white instead of black. But I have a part number now. You could try contacting the company to see if they happen to have a black version.

I've done some Google searching and can't find a black version, assuming the part number would be CD-95B instead of CD-95W.

I just realized I forgot to mention I did determine that radio was only used in the 1997 model year for Sunline, which does narrow the availability.

This was common in the mid '90's though. I did know '98 brought a new type of radio, but I couldn't remember if '96 used this Encore or not. Turns out it doesn't. Actually you should be glad you don't have a '96, that thing was huge. Imagine that whole panel area taken up with a radio. The unit itself sort of looked as big as a VCR...

Jon,

How different was the cassette player, than the voyager AM/FM/CD that was used extensively in the latter years? I have one of the Voyager units, but it is the silver.

My AM/FM/Cassette died and I replaced it with a take-out unit from a Jeep that was a "cash for clunkers" car. I documented the mod pretty well:

Upgrading the AM/FM Radio

This mod could actually be done much easier using an after-market unit that comes with its own mounting system. But my budget was tight and the AM/FM/CD/Cassette from an '01 Grand Cherokee was free. If you were to use an after-market unit, there would be no mods to the woodwork needed. Just make up a new cover panel, and mount the radio to the panel. Wiring documentation for after-market units is quite complete.

We've chewed on the radio thing pretty well here at SOC. As our trailers get older, more of the RV type radio units will likely fail.

The cassette player is quite a bit different size wise, and it is larger. The major problem is that the cassette player is primarily vertical whereas the Voyager is primarily horizontal. But the hole size is larger altogether on the Voyager.

I'm aware of the dimensions for the mod I'm doing...
