Saved an 82 12 1/2MC from scrapyard

Hello from Milford CT. My good friend offered me his late fathers 1982 Sunline 12 1/2 MC. He purchased it from the original owner back in 2009. He took it hunting once or twice before he fell ill. It has been sitting in his backyard under a tarp unused for at least 8 years. My buddy just wanted it out of the yard and was going to list it for free scrap. I replaced the two flat tires. One brake drum was frozen. After some persuading with a rather large hammer, the drum was removed and the brake pads were taken out. Made it home without an issue. It came with a three ring binder full of factory manuals. If I can share any, I would be more then happy to.

This is my first travel trailer/camper. Pretty new to the entire camping scene. We made our first trip camping a few weeks ago at Lake George NY for the Americade Motorcycle Rally. We slept in our enclosed 7x14 trailer that I made some modifications too.

Looking forward to restoring this to at least a usable condition.

Thanks

Jerry

Wow! Now we have two of the 12 1/2 MC that we can watch getting restored. Nice job on the exterior cleaning. Congrats!

Welcome Jerry! It does look to be in great shape, and complete minus the original hubcaps! I too recently picked up a 12 1/2' MC that I'm working on.

I am curious about any Sunline paperwork you have in your manual, especially if there's a brochure. I only have a specifications packet in my collection for 1982 travel trailers (scanned here under the files section), and I suspect there was a color version that was more of a sales brochure with pictures and stuff, but I don't have one. If you have one, that would basically make my week!

I will look in the binder tonight. I thought I saw a color brochure but not 100 percent certain.

I have one original hubcap. Everything else seems original too. Curtains, cushions. The paneling looks like it was painted white at some point

It's interesting to compare them- I've looked at pictures of these over the years many times, but you don't really get to know it that closely until you've felt all its curves and shapes!

I saw your interior picture showing one drawer, a cutting board/shelf, and a larger cabinet door under the refrigerator. I found that interesting since I had two drawers in that spot, a smaller cabinet door, and no cutting board/shelf. Now I see that's because you have a water heater! That wasn't even an option on the '79 12 1/2' MC, even though it was in every other floorplan. You also have a bathroom window that I don't have.

Too bad about the hubcap. I think the tabs would bend in over the years of going on and off, so eventually they'd fall off. I'd point you to one on eBay, but I bought it for mine recently. Keep an eye out, because they were used on other brands of trailers at the time too, so they are out there.

Not sure how, but I have a color 84 and 85 brochure. I see both are already on your great file page. I am sorry I couldn’t help out.

Hi...doing a great job cleaning her up! As for those color brochures, they are quite valuable to some people who collect them..just look on Ebay for some reference as to value..you may want to sell them!
Keep up the good work and just enjoy!

I guess valuable is relative lol. He'd be lucky to get a nice dinner out of them!

But yes, definitely not worth throwing out either.

Hi Jerry, my name is John and I'm in Maine. I took possession of my 1981 12 1/2 MC in 2004. It was my mom's and she passed away in 1999. She bought it used in 1985 and used it right up until her passing. I love my little camper but it's proving to be a little small when we take a couple of grand kids camping. Overall it's in good shape, I replaced the floor by the door 2 years ago and painted the roof with Flex-Seal last year trying to stop a pesky leak that I can't find. Some of the interior wood is rotting now and it really needs to be replaced. But it's still usable and I love camping in it. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine. God Bless, John

Hi John. It sounds like we have similar trailers with similar backgrounds. I am looking forward to taking mine out for the first time. We have a campsite reserved for mid August here in CT for a weekend. Hopefully it will be ready by then. Good luck with yours

A few interior pics

Here are just a few more interior pictures. Any recommendations for cleaning the cushions and curtains? They look original and I would like to keep them. They just smell stale.

You should be able to unclip the curtains, remove the hooks, and wash them in the washing machine gently. That will help a lot too.

Cushions are a little trickier. You might be able to wash cold and hang to dry, but that's risky. You don't want shrinkage where you couldn't get the foam back in. You could also try using a carpet cleaner (rent one if you don't have one) and use the hand attachment. I've done that with mine before and it works well. Put them out in the sun to dry.

Wow, a free 12.5 Sunline in mostly original condition! Would love to have one - in addition to our 2363, of course. Happy camping!

P.S. - Yes, wash those curtains on the gentle cycle with a gentle detergent, if you have it, or simply mix some mild detergent in a bucket and let them soak for a bit & rinse. Hang them out to dry (as Jon recommended) as putting them in the dryer can shred older materials. For the cushions, you can also try spraying a light coating of white vinegar on them & let them sun-dry. You may have to do that more than once.

Hey Jerry, We have a 1984 T1550. I put my cushion covers in the washing machine on gentle cycle and then hung them to air dry. Turned out great, a little brighter, def smell better! Unfortunately, my curtains were thread bare and unusable.

It is with a heavy heart to announce we have decided to sell the Sunline. I found some soft spots in the floor and walls. It’s beyond my skill level to properly repair it. Thank you to everyone that offered advice and encouragement. I will list it in the classified section.

I didn't think I could do the repairs either but was able to. I have (had) no carpenter skills at all. I am sure you can do it. The best of luck in whatever you decide.

Hi Jerry, we also have a 12 1/2 MC, ours is a '79, was in a barn for approx 35 years. we used it a couple of times last fall after purchase, did some reno over the past months and ready to go camping. Ours came with nothing (paperwork wise). would love to have some info, I would upload pics but don't know how. Maybe you have info on wiring? Ours has no inverter, just a 2 plug outlet on underside of kitchen cab., and one plug with light over table/bed. We have a short somewhere in tail/brake lights. will look forward to hearing from you, we live in Zanesville, Ohio area
