Salutations! New to travel trailers, new to forums

We started as tent campers, moved to a small pop-up, and this winter we purchased a 1982 Sunline 15 1/2 SB TT. So experienced campers, but not experienced RVers. We wanted something we could park, level, and sleep in, and something that we wouldn't have to set up again at home if it was wet. Our vehicle is a Subaru Outback with a tow capacity of 2700 lbs. And we have 2 kids, teen & tween. We probably paid too much for this given the shape it's in, but trailers meeting our needs and budget were few and far between.

So far we've fixed a leak, repaired a section of rotting floor, and scrubbed it top to bottom.

We still have to fix a wiring issue... no bathroom light, no light over the table. Does anyone have a diagram for this model? I didn't see it in that section of the forum, but hope springs eternal.

We haven't tested the water system yet.

We tested the propane system and the stovetop works. Haven't figured out the oven yet, and we're not sure about the heater. The refrigerator doesn't work on propane or electric.

And there was an unlocated nest of carpenter ants. We tried listening to walls and the floor with a stethoscope, but we couldn't find it. Since the rotted wood is gone, we're hoping they've relocated. They haven't been spotted lately. Any advice in this area is welcome, though.

Someone did repairs using sealing caulk on the inside (Is this a legit thing? Seems really sus.), and rebuilding one of the table benches. They made it not level with the other side. They also put in a new table that doesn't really fit, moving the original hardware to new positions. The latch on one side doesn't work. So we could still use that area as a bed, my husband fitted some plywood for the space and used some strips of wood under the edges to make it level. That's a do-fer; we plan to make a new table that will work, and rebuild the bench again.

We have plans redo the interior as a wattle and daub style adventurer's inn - Dancing Dragon Party Wagon concept. Yes, I said it. (But the name will probably change since the kids don't like it.)

Well, that got lengthy. I'll probably be looking for lots of advice.

Welcome klhdv!

Congrats on your new Sunny! Exciting time's ahead.

You have a lot of questions in one post, for future one question per post can help better so folks do not get so overwhelmed.

Here is a few answers.

On the wiring issue, for your vintage camper we have no actual wiring diagram but can help as many of us know camper electricity and how many of the Sunlines were wired. Power to the lights is 12 VDC and some lights in a room are on a wall switch while other lights only have a switch on the light fixture. If the bulb is not blown and the light switch is on, if there is one, this comes down to a 12 volt DC power check. Also to note, sometimes the little switch on the light fixture dies too.

First check that all fuses in the power center are not blown. If all fuses are OK, next is using a volt meter test the light fixture for power. If there is none, then you have to hunt for where the power wiring is broken or loose. All of the lights that are not on a wall switch, have a common power daisy chain supply loop. They jump from one light to the next and keep on going until the last light fixture. Also, Sunline ran a 12 volt ground (-) wire to each fixture. The hot (+) wire may be ok, but the ground wire may be what is broken. If there has been water damage inside the walls or ceiling, often times corrosion gets into the wire nuts they used to connect the light fixture wires and that can corrode bad enough to not let the light work. Consider this a place to start on why those two lights do not work. They both may be related to the same problem, fix the power/ground break on the first one and the second may start working.

On using caulk inside the camper, well sometimes it is used as a cosmetic caulk to fill an ugly crack. Sunline did not use much of that practice but other RV makers do. If the caulk is used to try and stop a leak inside the camper, that thought will not work for very long as the water leak source is still there rotting something else out.

Ants, yeh, they are very attracted to wet wood and electrical wires. Something about electrical current flowing in a wire that ants are attracted to. I run into these buggers when doing restoration work. Using the ant bait traps that they collect it and take it back to their nest has had some level of working. I have never heard them in the walls etc, only when I open up the siding etc. and there is a mega nest do I find them. Ant spray then works. But a Sunline friend did use the ant bait traps and they did work. It just took a good deal of time to work.

Hope this helps and looking forward to hearing and seeing, we like pics!, of your Sunline in action.

John
