Welcome Kev! Your motorhome doesn't look like a typical Sunline from that time, but I can see ways that it could be one. Do you have anything showing that it is?

Pardon me, I got the name wrong; it was called SunDat , and made by Cal Camp Industries of Hemet California , according to the Data plate, see attached pics , Kev.

Hmm ok, I see now. I've never heard of that brand, so I bet it's uncommon. Also explains how it has been in California with such low mileage- the Sunline ones I don't think were ever sold out there.

Either way, you're still welcome here! Our '78-83 Solaris motorhome used the same Datsun chassis for a few of those years and there's a lot in common. We had a member recently, Islanders, who worked on restoring one and learned a lot about it. I believe they have since sold the motorhome, but I'm sure they'd be happy to help if you reached out to them with a question.

Hi Kev,

Thanks for sharing the pics of your motorhome and other old time favorites. It is amazing how little to no rust is on them. Even the Model A. That was a nice trip down memory lane.

Seeing under the hood of the Datsun sure brings back memories. A carbureted engine with points and condenser. I fit right on with that era!

Thanks for sharing your story too. A good read. It looks like you have several things already planned for your retirement complete with large toys! Great and they will help you keep busy.

Take care and stop in from time to time.

Thanks

John

Thanks for the warm welcome guys; John I actually spend a lot more time on the Model A's than anything else these days, but I've been into Datsuns and Model A's from a teen right up to today ( age 56 ) I've owned quite a few of each and am currently attempting a Fine Point restoration on the A . I've got a 1979 620 Datsun I've owned from brand new so I am very familiar with them mechanically ( its my daily driver and still gets used a lot) ,the Datsun Mini motorhome was a fluke that just happened by mistake a few years back, although I'd long wanted one I never thought I'd find one but there it was so I bought it. The irony is , I am not much of a camper so I really doubt I'll ever use it much - for me the restoration will be all the fun! I am sure this site will come in handy in future years when it really gets my attention,by the way my 1988 Chrysler 5th Avenue is also still carbureted ( one of the last sold ) I don't like todays fuel injected / computer controlled motors ; carbs make a lot more sense to me Kev

Yes, I too like looking at and fixing up old engines/equipment. During my teenage years I had my own Model 15 Caterpillar crawler. Doesn't every teenager....

They looked like this https://ingeniumcanada.org/agricultu...ed-tractor.php

Not that one of course but just like it and whole lot more rusty.... I freed up the engine, the magneto was bad and getting parts for 1929 crawler was not easy... I found a 4 cylinder magneto out of International tractor and adapted it. One cylinder had rust frozen rings. Went to the local NAPA store and they made custom rings for it for me. The throwout bearing on the clutch was shot. My uncle acquired a modern day thrust bearing that fit the housing and it worked. Once I had it running, I built a dirt blade and added hydraulics to it. Used it for many years until we sold the farm. Out of all the equipment I had to sell, that 15 Crawler was the first to be sold and the guy was ecstatic he found it.

My stepdad had on open crankcase "1 lunger" "hit and miss" engine as we call it. It is a belt power engine. Have no idea the name, it was similar to this one https://www2.bing.com/videos/search?...1B&FORM=VDQVAP

We ran it with a buzz box coil as the mag was shot. I was able to get it running. Truly amazing.

Seeing how they created engines and machines over 100 year ago is amazing how simple they were. This is a dawn of what was to come later in the auto industry. At state fairs I just watch these things run and I'm still amazed at the simplicity.

Have fun with your restoration.

Thanks

John
