New to Sunline

Hi there, I recently bought a 1983 T-2100. Trying to find the weight. Any ideas?

Welcome!

Congrats on your new Sunny!

The empty/dry weights (no battery and no LP gas in the tanks) shows up in the sale brochures.

To get to the files section, you need to be logged into the forum.
At the top of the forum are tabs, look for the word "FILES" click it.

Once into the files section, scroll down to the "Sunline Brochures" section. Go in there, scroll to your camper year and download a sale brochure. Empty camper tongue weights and gross weights are shown there on most models. But remember, the tongue weight goes up from the brochure dry weight when you load the camper.

Note: Some of the older camper brochures listed dry axle weights, and they listed dry tongue weights. You have to add the two together to get the camper gross weight. The GVWR max weight (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is also listed.

Hope this helps,

John

Thanks John! I found the '83 brochure, it's showing 2550 lbs for dry axle weight and 290 lbs as a hitch weight .. So I'll assume the trailer is just under 3000 lbs. Does that sound right for the T-2100? Just trying to figure out what kind of car I'll need to tow it 800 miles this Summer!

cheers

Hi mitchbt,

I looked in the 1983 brochures and there are two brochures for that year. One says Spec's and shows the floor plans with "limited" data on them at the bottom. I found your same 2,550# dry axle weight with a 290# dry tongue weight for the T-2100.

But, those dry weights/empty camper weights with no camping gear in them and you have a 2 axle camper which can hold a lot more weight.

If you look in the other brochure for the 1983 travel trailers, scroll down to page 5 and see the T2100 series (2100/2101/2102/2103) there they list other weights and weight limits. Sadly, the left hand labels as to what row is what is missing, but I can figure it out from the ratings. There are 4 floor plans in that T2100 series and they change the rear bed/sofa's around between the models.

I'm not sure all 4 have the exact same empty weights, but the max weights would be the same for you to size up a tow vehicle. The T2100 series has these weights on page 5,

Axle weight empty/dry: 2,345#
Hitch weight, empty/dry: 310#

Max axle weight rating: 4,200# This is the max you should load in the camper held by the axle. This does not include loaded tongue weight. Back in 1983, they did not list GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) they listed out the max axle rating.

Loading the camper to 4,200# on the axles, should have/could have a 500 to 550# loaded tongue weight. 4,200# + 550# = 4,750# GVW

You should be looking for a tow vehicle to handle a 4,750 travel trailer with a 550# loaded tongue weight. You mentioned a car to tow with, I'm not sure a modern day "car" is rated to tow that high. Some larger SUV's, Vans, or pickup trucks, yes.

When towing travel trailers verses open type trailers, travel trailers have more wind resistance (drag) then an open trailer and auto (car or truck) tow ratings do not account for the larger wind resistance in their "tow rating". Meaning you have to look for a larger vehicle to have a pleasant towing experience when it comes to towing a travel trailer.

This post may help some on sizing up the tow vehicle with the camper.

Hope this helps, if you need more help, just ask. I know this can be confusing on your first go around. We are trying to help you not have to learn everything the hard way, like most of us have.
