Wink New to camping!!

Hi all! Very excited! I just purchased a 1988 t1550 for $900. She's in great shape and needs just a little TLC inside. Hoping to get her out at least once in the fall.

I will be needing some new cushion covers.Does anyone know of a website where I can puchase these? Also, since I'm new to camping, can you each recommend something that you can't live without while camping? I would like to start some shopping.

Thanks, and I'm giddy like a school girl!

Welcome Amy and congrats on your new coach!

These are fun toys and can get extremely addictive….

Now to your question on some kind of camping something we can’t do with out?? That is a good question but I’m drawing a blank believe it or not. I came out of the back packing style of camping where you has almost nothing as you could not carry it. So you figured out how to use one item do 3 or 4 different things. And that was a great way to camp and I loved it. Now we haul even the kitchen sink….and still love it…

The biggest thing is to enjoy camping. If you forget something, don’t sweat it. Your camping. Put it on the list for next time and it might take several trips until the list stops growing so much… but it will. And in a campground there is always someone who will help, just ask for that can opener or what ever you forgot. They will be glad to help and have a good yak session as well.

Happy camping and welcome to the club.

John

Hi Amy,

Welcome to the group and congrats on your little Sunline purchase. The 1550 is a great little floorplan.

As for new cushion covers, well "IF" you can sew, your best choice is making them yourself. If you can't sew, you will need to find someone that does. I don't know of any place where you can purchase ready-made cushion covers.

Gotta have item ? My 32' Sunline 5th wheel , OH OH wait a minute, you meant an item to purchase for use in your Sunline. Well, I'd have to recommend this:

Comfort Grip Lighter - Item - Camping World

Yes, you can buy cheaper ones, but I find that the flexible "neck" makes it easier to light stove burners (if they are not "DSI" digital spark ignition).

Of course a GOOD set of wheel chocks, a good plank/block of wood for the tongue jack to sit on, "white" water hose for potable water.

Sleeping bag makes it a lot easier than trying to put sheets blankets on the coucho cushions.

Most of ALL, find/make time to use your wonderful little Sunline.

Tires, please check the date code on your tires "IF" they are approaching 5 years or older, they should be replaced.

OK, I've done enough damage, now time for some others' to chime in.

Kitty

Hi Amy and welcome to the club.

Kitty gave you some good items & advice already.

OK the first thing I need To level the TT is two or three 2"x 8" planks from app.12" to 20" long + one 3/4"x 8"x app.12"long pc. Or you could buy Leveling blocks for App. $20. to $50.
I also can't live without two small screw-on levels one for side corner & one for front corner of the TT....Cost App. $11.
We also carry 3ltr. bottles of drinking water because @ some campgrounds you will not want to drink their water.
Enjoy your new camper........

Welcome to the SOC Amy.

The previous suggestions are excellent. To add a couple of my own to those:

A light, comfortable folding chair to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Tin foil - you can wrap a lot of things in foil to cook over the grill or campfire.

Dish pans - one of the holdovers from our tenting days are 2 plastic dishpans. They happened to be a perfect fit in our Sunline and save a lot of wear and tear on the plastic sink. A couple of inches of hot water in one to wash and a couple of inches of hot water in the other to rinse. Of course now the hot water comes from the faucet not the Coleman stove. When we are on the move they hold plastic table cloth and a bunch of other related things and ride in the drawer under the sink.

Welcome Amy,

I'm from CT also . Not sure what you may have already, but a few things are important.

MOST IMPORTANT are those tires...they are arguably the travel trailers weakest link. Check and adjust the air pressure in the tires each and every time you take a camping trip. May sure you do this as accurately as you can using a tire pressure gage. As Kitty noted the date code on the tires sidewall will hint at it's age...more than 5 years old and they become hazardous even if the thread looks great. Stay aware of these tire Amy! Do you own a spare tire?

That White water hose Kitty mentioned is a very basic need.

A sewer hose to aid in emptying your black/gray tanks at the C/G

Check your electric line to see what type connector is on the end. You may need a plug adapter in some C/G situations to be able to plug in to their power.

Get a bag of cheap bungy cords to secure stuff in the trailer and around camp...they are handy.

Get a broom to wisk the debris out with..camping gets messy at times .

Get a door mat to place outside the door for wiping dirty shoes on before they mess up the trailer...more broom time...phew!

Get a length of rope to make a simple clothes line to hang damp towels etc out in the sunshine to dry nice.

A flashlight is always handy to have around the trailer too

Okay get shopping...as if you haven't already .

Good Luck!

Bob

Hi Amy,
My "must haves" are a deck of cards, UNO card game, 5 dice, and a pad of paper and pencil, these are great IF you end up with a rainy day, (they do happen!) I don't like to take a TV, I would rather just sit outside in the evenings and listen to the sounds. Most of all enjoy yourself!!

If you are looking at that strange looking plug on the end of the shore line cord that has prongs that look like this.

That is a 30 amp 120 VAC plug special for campers. You can buy an adapter that takes those 3 prongs and converts it to a normal looking 15 amp 120VAC plug like you have at home. That allows you to run the camper at home on "limited" power. up to that 15 amps. Do not use the AC unit as it does not have enough power but it will work most all other appliances if used in limited quanties.

Walmart in there mini RV section sells the adapter in most larger Walmarts. If not any RV dealer has them or you can buy on line.

Here is one place RVUpgradeStore - 30-15 Adapter

Hope this helps

John

Remember, that plug looks almost like the 220 volt plug used on a home electic dryer. It is not 220 volts it is 110 volts, 30 amps. Don't let some master electrician tell you otherwise.

I point that out only because a campground in Maine had an electrician wire some outlets and a woman first time camper was badly burned and blew out her fridge, TV and microwave because the electrician wired the outlets to 220 volts thinking they looked like home dryer outlets. The lawsuit is still pending.
