Hi everyone,

I'm a new sunline member. We have a 1979 17 1/2ft travel trailer. It's been sitting for a number of years. It has been fully covered dring this holetime. Haven't been moved either. Going to try to restore it. Don't know where to start.

Jerry

Welcome Jerry! Are you looking to do a correct restoration or just a repair and renovate? Do you have any pictures? We can help point out things to start with by looking at pictures. Usually the best place to start is with resealing the roof, but it depends if there's any water damage that needs to be addressed where you'd need to remove parts before doing that.

Welcome Wenham,

Sounds like you have a little gem of a find there. Very cool!! Congrats on the new Sunny.

Where to start, we need some info on your situation to better help suggest. Some things to think through on your end to answer.

Are you in a hurry to go camping? Some of these restores/renovations take a lot of time. If you are trying to use it within the next month or so that sets a start direction as you are towing it down the road and many things need to work for that and to go camping. That is a certain list.

If you are not going camping any time soon, like 6 months to a year out, then the renovations can take a different direction. More going over everything and then figuring out what you will renovate.

If the camper is semi close to a usable state, their is merit to going on a few campouts before any big renovation starts. This way you can actually camp in the unit and find out what preconceived notions were good or not so good. And you then have a whole new list of renovations....

Let us know your thoughts and big picture plans and we may be able to help point you in a direction of where to start.

Hope this helps

John

Welcome from Maryland! We’d love to see your pictures. I use the Tapatalk app and it’s very easy to upload pictures off your phone.

When you're on the thread, click the post reply button at the end of the thread, in the lower left, above the reply box. This opens a new reply page. Once there, scroll down beyond the Submit Reply button, and click manage attachments. A pop up should open, where you can select your files and click upload. Once you do, just close the window, type out the rest of your message, and then hit submit reply.

That looks in great shape, Jerry! Here would be my action plan, based on the pictures:

- Buy new ST rated tires for it, have them mounted and balanced. Those are the original hubcaps, so careful not to damage them!
- Pull the brake drums, inspect them and make sure they aren't frozen or too worn out. You can pretty much only buy magnets for them now, so hopefully they aren't bad or else you'd have to replace the axles.
- Remove/clean/inspect the inner and outer bearings. Replace if needed.
- Test all the trailer lights to make sure they work. From what I can tell, they look all present and in good shape, but bulbs may be burned out, sockets may be corroded. The same lights are still available, Bargman #99 series, and can be bought online in both colors and at some RV dealers.
- Replace all the corner molding vinyl insert trim around the trailer. This trim is missing now and I see lots of rusty screws. Water can seep in around them, causing wood rot. Now is the time to replace it before it leaves from under cover. You buy it in a roll and push it in on both sides. There are a couple different widths, not sure what you'll need. It's supposed to bubble out some over the screws, so the trim will be wider than the metal channel when flat. https://www.amazon.com/Camco-Vinyl-I.../dp/B0006JLW5M
- Reseal the roof with Dyco 20/20 mobile home roof seam paint, or similar product, before or immediately after pulling it from under cover. Spot clean if needed and remove any loose areas of old sealant. No need to coat the whole roof, just the seams that are already coated. Dyco 20/20 Seam Sealant 1 Quart White - $27.99
- Fix the awning to make it ready for travel. It looks like the arms need to retract more, possibly by removing a stop pin. This will lower the roller down to go up next to the trailer. Make sure it's locked together so it won't unroll in travel, bungee the arms together if you aren't sure.

From there, everything else can be done after you move it and at your own pace. Those are the critical things.

I should still be able to pull it out from the cover. Are you saying check the wheels first before I pull it out. Even if it easier to work on in another place. If not I am assuming replace screws.

Use your judgement on that. Depending on how far you're going, if it's just a few miles, you may be able to get there on the old tires at slow speeds. Just make sure to inflate them properly first if you can. If you mean just outside the shelter, that should be perfectly fine. When I made my statement, I assumed you'd be moving it an hour plus drive after you remove it from the shelter.

The roof seam stuff I would try to do under the shelter if at all possible. It's just that the trailer is nice and dry right now, it would be nice to preserve that without rain water seeping in. There's a good chance the old seam sealant has split from age and temperature changes, meaning it might be wide open to receive rain water. If you must pull it out from the shelter first, plan to inspect the roof right away and seal it shortly after.

Looked at the roof, it has a couple of dips in it, is real dirty.
The seams you are talking about they look like ribs going across there is either 3 or 4. Or is it it around the edge of the trim mouldings.

Dips shouldn't be a problem. As for the seams, yes to all you describe. The roof on your Sunline is aluminum, and it consists of a few interlocking panels. The joints between those panels are then sealed with the brush on roof sealant, which sounds like the ribs you see. The edges at the trim moldings are also sealed

In addition, if the metal is screwed down anywhere to the trailer, or things are screwed onto the roof (roof vents, refrigerator vent, etc), all of these places need sealant too.

You should sort of be able to tell where the the old sealant was- you should hopefully see some brush marks or see a texture difference. Basically re-coat any of the old.

I should note too, the roof is not designed to be walked on as you see it. You can put some boards down between rafters to support your weight and then you can walk up there.
