Hi jduhl,

on your older 86 fridge, yes the fridge needs to be level in both directions. Left to right and front to back. You can put a normal torpeo level on the fridge shelf or the camper floor in front of the fridge

It will take a good 8 hours to cool the fridge down. And when you open the door it might now feel like a bunch of cold air is coming out. Put a cup or quart etc of water in and it will be cold. Or put a thermometer inside when you turn it on. These kind of fridges work different then the home fridges. The RV fridge actually extracts the heat and leaves you with cold. Not like the home fridge that pumps cold in.

I did a hit on Dometic RM 2500 fridge on Bing and here is a manual for that fridge

DOMETIC RM2300 INSTALLATION & OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS MANUAL Pdf Download.

Hope this helps

John

is it normal for the boiler and pump area outside of the fridge to get very hot behind the outside cover when pluged in with electric

Yes. It's using electricity to generate heat to run the fridge just like it would with propane.

Double check your roof vent and make sure nothing is obstructing the air flow which would cause the compartment to get hotter than it should. Pull the cover and visually inspect for blockage. Yes, you have to get on a ladder to remove the vent but it needs to be done.

Newer RVa have fans up in the roof vent to improve air flow. Kits are available at RV shops and online.

My Cougar has the fridge in a slide-out so there is no roof vent. It has an upper wall vent and there is a fan in there controlled by a thermal switch it works very well.

Straight above the fridge. Most of them are maybe 8" wide and about 18" long (rough estimate,) The cover is usually held in place with screws buried under caulk. The tape suggests that plastic may be broken. You can buy replacements if you can determine the brand. (It's not a Sunline product, but a very common RV part used on RVs everywhere.)
