Smile Hi from the U.P. of Michigan

Hello fellow Sunliners! Just got my 1981 Sunline travel trailer. Not sure the model but I believe the tag said 17.5' something FS. Got it real cheap but it needed lots of work. Good thing was everything in it worked, fridge, furnace, water heater etc all in good condition. The outside also looked real nice and tires were almost new.

So far I have pretty much gutted it. Have rebuilt the floor, roof and sidewall by entry door. Pulled all the skylights, vents and corner trims and cleaned everything on top. Getting close to start refinishing the inside. I'll probably make a post about the project complete with pics.

This is quite a change from my previous RV. I just sold my Ford super duty diesel and my 26' Jayco bunkhouse fifth wheel. Bought an 03 Toyota Tundra SR5 TRD with low miles that was cherry. Needed a small light camper to go with it and this one seemed to fit. Some regrets due to all the work it needed but hey, I'm a contractor and have the skills, tools and a heated shop to do it in. Not going to be anything fancy, just super sturdy, well insulated and functional. Going to finish with a rustic cabin look inside, at least that's the plan for now.

Anyways, hello and glad to be here.

Here's a few teaser pics

As it was when I found it.

The floor was bad, especially the bathroom.

Roof framing removed

New 2 x 4 roof framing with a 1 1/2" crown cut in
Can walk on it no problem

Hi Upbuilder,

Welcome to Sunline Owners Club!

You are definitely "into" your camper Great job! It's amazing just how bad it can get inside the walls, floor, roof and maybe not look that bad until you open it up. Then....

Did you take the roof metal off? In the one pic it looks like the roof is sort of still together then a full blown roof with plywood appears.

Your doing great and we will keep rooting you on!

Yes, a post in the modification section on your camper rebuild project will be super!

Looking forward to progress.

John

Thanks

I didn't take the roof off. I was able to get the 1/4" plywood up and in place and held with temporary supports. I then installed the rafters gluing them up into the plywood. It's very strong and makes lots of room for insulation.

The walls will all be 1 1/2" instead of 3/4" and have ridged insulation installed. I do a lot of boondocking including early spring and late fall and need it well insulated.

On the 1982 models, the Sunline decal on the side was over top of the striping near the rear. On 1981, it's somewhere above the striping.
