Towing a 264SR

Happy Holliday to all!!

My bride (of 28 Yrs.) and I recently purchased a 264SR YIPPEE!
We are now looking for a new tow vehicle. With a GVWR rating of 8600lbs. we are concerned about getting the right vehicle to do the job. Presently we are taking shorter trips of less than 500 miles, however in time we plan to take longer more extensive trips. The current tow vehicle is a 1997 3/4 ton chevy pu 350 v8 4:10 automatic with tow pkg.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Congratulations on the new purchase!!

Any of the new full size trucks will tow that TT without a problem. We currently pull our 2499TT with an F-250 Crew Cab, Short Bed, Powerstroke Diesel and it pulls, turns and handles like a dream. We've been averageing 13-15 MPG and the funny thing, as long as I keep the PRM's below 2 grand, I get better milage when I'm towing than when it's just the truck on it's own. We chose the Ford powerplant after years of working in the excavating business and almost every vehicle in the business was a F-Series. They are bombproof and the diesels will pull almost anything you hook up to the bumper.

I also worked at the GM PRoving Grounds in MI for a few years and I loved the turning radius of the Full Size Chevy's. Their diesels arent as notorious as the Powerstrokes, but the Allison transmission is what every other truck company strives to copy.

I've never had much time behind the wheel of any Dodge's but the few friends that have them love them and wouldnt give them up for anything. THe one thing we wouldnt do without it making sure you go for the Crew Cab option. It just makes it so much more easy to throw some stuff in the back or bring along some friends. I can timagine those people that travel around in a single cab not being able to recline their seat even?!?!

Good luck in your travels, I hope you can make the long trips soon.

Pat

I'll second the idea that you consider a diesel. If there's a "right" vehicle for towing, it's a diesel. We towed with a series of Suburbans and Tahoes over the years because we needed a combination family car-tow vehicle. With the kids gone we decided to get a dedicated tow vehicle. After a lot of research we settled on a Silverado 2500HD with the Duramax engine/Allison transmission combination. Actually, I'm not a truck guy by nature, but the Duramax was a true revelation: never has towing been so easy. The Allison transmission is smarter than you are. Do a Google search on it and you'll find out it's a mechanical and electronic marvel. It's got its own owners' manual for crying out loud.

If you're interested, visit RV.net's tow vehicles forum. Search the forum on "diesel" and, once you get past the Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge silliness, you'll get more information than you need.

Hope this helps.

As the previous posters have said a diesel truck does make towing a trailer of this size a more confortable task. It may represent a little overkill to some, but I'd prefer to be over equipped in this instance. Another member mentioned the crew cab option, and he's absolutely correct. It just takes a pickup truck and turns it into a family vehicle with sooooo much utility value that cannot be overstated. My truck happens to be a Dodge, but in fact a diesel truck from any of the big three mfgs will be a great tow vehicle. Buy what you like....but don't scimp with a marginal purchse that just barely makes the weight/tow ratings either. The numbers involved in getting your complete rig to road readiness will be an evolving math question that is best handled with bigger rather than smaller were a TV is concerned. A 3/4 ton diesel truck would be such a vehicle. We all have opinions, and that was mine. Best of luck to you in your travels with that best of all trailers..Sunline.

you will definately want atleast another 3/4 ton truck,as mentioned you can't beat a diesel for towing but if you don't want a diesel ford offers the v-10 and gm the 8.1,dodge no longer has any big gas motors offered in the 2500 series.

Congratulations on your 264SR!!

We also have a 264SR and we tow using an 06 F-350 SD 4x4 Supercab, 5.4 V-8 engine and it does an excellent job. We were thinking about going diesel but we decided against it for more factors than one.

If you have any questions..feel free to contact us privately.

Again..congrats on your 264!!!

We love our GMC Sierra 2500 D/A. It tows our trailer like it's not there. I literally can forget it's behind us on the highway. And Allison rules on those downhill grades!

We have since upgraded to a 2011 F250 6.7 powerstroke diesel and it made a world of difference in our towing performance. In areas were the old vehicle's engine would scream the diesel just purrs right along no problem at all.

Hi

not sure if you are only looking for a pick up but the Ford excursion or the chevy suburban both can be found in a 3/4 ton version I tow my 264sr with a 2000 excursion with a v-10 gas motor and it will pull any hill any were ant the excursion can have a diesel in it also. and they can be found for pretty reasonable prices since they are so big and ford stopped making them in 2006. just my .02 good luck
