Refrigerator roof vent

Hi. Looking for a new roof refrigerator vent cover for my Sunline Solaris 2000. Can I use a temporary plastic cover over vent? Will it hurt anything if vent is broken and not completely covering vent?
Thanks
Gregory.

Hi Gregory.
The cover prevents rain water from entering into the backside of the refrigerator compartment. The covers are available at almost an rv dealers or perhaps someone else may know of an online source. I would not cover it as there is heat generated when the refrigerator is in operation and that heat is vented out the opening.

Hi Gregory,

As long as no one has changed the original base of the roof vent to a different style then what Sunline shipped the camper with, this Camco cover will work very well. I have used many of them. Good quality are a fair price.

Camco 42160 Refrigerator vent cover if you have a local RV dealer

Here are some online places that I have used to get them and had good experiences. It seems they are selling out, but there are some places that list they have them. Call and make sure before ordering

Not sure why ETrailler is so high on the cost.

You can cover the hole in the roof with plastic and tie or tape it on. And really want to cover the hole as rain will get in and damage the system and camper. BUT you must "not" run the fridge with the plastic on. As Roger said, the heat has to get out when the fridge is on or it will become a fire hazard.

Hope this helps.

John

Is the correct height for the base of the refrigerator vent cover 1 3/4 inches high. The one I’m replacing is taller. Around 2 3/4 inches high

Kit,

Are you replacing both the base and the cover at the same time? And are you using the Camco brand base and cover or a new Dometic base and cover?

If you are using a new camco base and their cover, it will work, just the camco base is shorter. The camco cover will fit on the old original Dometic base.

The new camco base is shorter then the original Dometic base.

Dometic no longer sells the older style bases that came on your camper model year camper or any newer Sunline up to the 2007 models. But they sell replacement covers for the old base. If you want to use a new Dometic brand base, you have to buy the entire new style base and new style cover. The new Dometic style cover is not compatible with the old style Dometic bases.

Hope this helps

John

Hi folks hello John yes I am replacing the base and the top both of them are Camco. the old base was dometic and was very brittle so I cut that out of there and I’m going to install the Camco base with the Camco top and the base is a little shorter as you know. I was just wondering if that would be OK since it’s probably about an inch shorter than the one that’s replacing.

Yes Kit, using the shorter new Camco base is OK. I have used it 3 times already on roof repairs.

See pic of a new Camco cover and base on a new roof install.

I myself, do not like the quality of the new design Dometic base and cover. Their old design was much stronger, flatter and higher molding quality. I had no issues with them.
