Whew! What a nightmare!
When I bought the 99 dually, it ran great.. Until I put some of my "Home-brew" fuel in it. The PO had run veggie oil for fuel and it left residue in the fuel system. My fuel has a lot of solvents in it and broke the residue loose. It ended up holding the fuel pressure regulator open and caused me to have insufficient fuel pressure. The injectors in powerstrokes rely on fuel, to lubricate the internals. Without that lubrication, the injectors were damaged.
The guy I bought the truck from, brought another set of injectors and installed them for free. The truck ran great.... For a week. We did not yet know about the low fuel pressure and those injectors were trashed too. It was then, that I started searching for and found the problem. Luckily, I had bought a "Spare" set of used injectors, in case of any possible future problems. They came in VERY handy.
The signs of the bad injectors was the truck smoking very badly. After installing my "Spare" injectors, the smoke didn't go away. That had me very worried. I was hoping I hadn't bought a useless set of injectors.
This morning, I found that one of the injectors I had installed was very weak. There's a diesel shop 30 miles away and they have new injectors. I bought one new one and got it in the truck today. After a tense test drive, the truck is finally not smoking like a freight train anymore!
I'm really hoping my injector/smoke issue is over for a while! Now, it's time to get the 5th wheel hitch installed, so we can get to some serious camping!

Veggie oil, doesn't that get sticky when exposed to air for a while? Or is that what happened?
Glad you have this sorted out. Keep at it, I know you will come thru. From every "event" we keep learning.... It sure would be a whole lot easier if we where born with it.... LOL
Good luck and hope you can get out soon.
John

I have a buddy who owns a restaurant. I always wondered why his truck smelled like french fries.

I have no idea how the residue managed to stick to the inside of the fuel system. What I found stuck to the fuel filter and stuck in the fuel pressure regulator, was simply nasty looking. There were flakes of it, stuck inside the regulator.

Running veggie oil was my first choice, when I got a diesel truck. The local rendering company has a monopoly on the waste oil collection. Restaurants are scared to give it away. When I called the rendering company, they said that they would sell it to me. Problem there is the fact that they mix it with several other waste products. They would, however, sell it to me for $3.95 a gallon...
