Tow vehicle
Observed an actual 10 MPG towing for 1,800 miles PA to GA and back towing a 2006 T-2499 with a 2007 Chrysler Aspen 5.7 liter HEMI multi-displacement v8 in tow mode. That's with 2 bikes on a rooftop rack blowing in the wind.
Drops down to mid 9's on same trip with winter gas.
Standard mileage is between 14 - 17 but getting better as the car gets more mileage on it.

Update.
I think our Cummins is showing signs of breaking in.
Last week I drove 210 miles to pick up our T2499 at my son's place in Rapid City.
I set the cruise control at 55 MPH and got 24.7 MPG. Yes, that is kind of slow, but I am retired. On the way back with the Sunline in tow, and at the same speed, the mileage indicator read 17,7 for the same 210 miles. Michigan is pretty flat. I am sure serious hils or mountains would have a very negative effect on these numbers. It seems you never quite get back going down hill what you spent going up.
With the fuel prices where they are these days, it pays to slow down.

WOW that is great! Wish they had an Elixir…. That we could add to the big gassers to help boost the mileage and didn’t mess up the engine in the process and be affordable. I know mine does not like even the hint of ethanol. Since I can’t get 100% gas here in Ohio I’m at the mercy of what the filling station have to offer.
Happy camping
John

I'll have to check with Gary to see about fuel consumption since he does ALL the fueling of the trucks now

I believe our dually averaged 8MPG on our camping trip, this past weekend. Granted, there were several 6% grades to climb both ways.

Gary,
What goes up, must come down, but like I said, it does not seem like you gain back coming down what you spent going up.
My Dodge is a 2500 4x4, so no duallies, but I don't think that should hurt. My son has a 3500 with duallies, but otherwise the same as my 2500. His is well broken in, and with a chip and Banks exhaust and air filter, he gets better fuel consumption than I do.

I would probably be worried, if I had to pay full pump price for my fuel. Thankfully, I'm able to make my own fuel. Before we left, I made almost 300 gallons. I may have had $40~$50 in it...
Also.... I was also pushing the truck hard. This was the first time towing our fifth wheel and I wanted to see how the truck would do...

Gary,
300 gallons at 9 mpg is about 2700 miles for a $50 investment. Less than two cents per mile. That is less than one tenth of my cost. Awesome!

Mountaineer
Only pulled our recently purchased T1550 once. Our 4.6L V8 Merc averaged 13mpg on the trip home.
Three days earlier, when we dropped a deposit on the trailer, I reset the trip 'puter and got 20.5 on the exact trip.

Kitty called her trip computer a "Lie-O-meter"
I wouldn't trust it completely.. If you do the math, it could be a lot different!

I do not know if any States still have stations that offer gasoline that is real gasoline and does not have ethanol but the ethanol will give much less mileage and performance. I have lost three miles per gallon just driving around without pulling anything. That is also one reason vehicles do not get closer to the advertised MPG.

Pure Gas . org
Don't get me started. Ethanol has done very little to reduce our dependence on oil, but it has done wonders for big ag, and as a side effect gasoline engine mechanics, all at the expense of the consumer and of course the taxpayer. Not to mention driving up food costs around the world.
Brilliant short term business strategy!

I don't take the trip puter as gospel but I suspect it is relative, as to say I'm probly losing 1/3 when pulling the camper

Jim, I 110% agree on the ethanol dropping the fuel mileage. My V10 does not even like the thought of it...
I did bump into this site Ethanol-free gas stations in the U.S. and Canada
In my area it seems the marinas sell pure gas. Must be a boat thing. Also interesting is there is not many 87 octane pure gas places in Ohio. Do not know if there are any places down your way but that web site might help locate them. For me pulling in with the camper to the boat launch to fill up isn't going to work....LOL

Opps didn't read the 3rd page. I see Grits posted the same pure gas site
Grits, what rear axle and how many speed tranny do you have? and rear tire size? And what speed do your tow at. If your getting 13 your doing good.
