10-12 seems to be the magic number no matter what you tow or what you drive bigger trucks pull bigger trailers little trucks pull smaller ones and they all seem to work equally hard for the load. Now if I could just learn to slow down---.

mmm, I think 8-12 is more realistic. A gas truck and a slide trailer likely won't ever see 10, unless it's one of the low profile SRs. But you're right, that's about the magic range that really doesn't change much.

Wow I can't believe this thread is still rolling from 2009! Just goes to show the MPG question never gets old.
Still driving the old Dodge and the news has not got better.

Hi
2004 Sunline Solaris T2075
2008 Chev Tahoe, 5.3 V8 z71 4x4 3.73 axle factory towing
Hwy Towing: 9.5 MPG
Hwy Normal driving : 18-20 MPG
When towing, we air up the Tahoe tires to 44 Psi cold (Michelin LTX2), and drive with transmission in "3" with tow haul "on". This keeps the revs steady at 2500 rpm @ 65 Mph.

2nd trip of the summer
Had a 5 day campout this past weekend in Middletown, R.I. MPG for the F-150 was 9mpg with a speed of 55 mph.
Hope to be trading the F-150 for a GMC 2500HD/8.1L soon.

2009 GMC Canyon, 4 cyl, 5 speed towing an '83 T-1550
Has the tow package from the factory (higher numeric rear end ratio), so only gets 22-23 mpg without a load.
We get 16-18 towing at 60-65. I tow in 4th gear only when we're on the interstates, it's about 2800 on the tach.
We're looking to get a tow vehicle with more oomph next year. The problem is, I need it to get back and forth to work, and commute 45 miles a day, not including time spent in it traveling on business for which I get the federal rate.
Frank

I have a 2002 1500 Chevy Express van with a 5.7L engine and a 4.10 rear end upgraded from a 3.73. This was the last year before 5.3L motor and towing button were standard.
Pulling a Solaris T2670, I've weighed in before @ 12500 combined weight. This is above stated combined vehicle weight of 12,000 lbs for stock vehicle. Added 3/4 ton leaf springs, rear sway bar and polyurethane leaf spring bushings (instead of stock rubber) to get higher combined weight rating
Van gets ~ 13 mpg city
Pulling trailer flat land in overdrive speeds 65-75mph, ~9-11 mpg
Pulling trailer mountains in 3rd, speeds 60-70mph, ~7-9 mpg. Have to keep motor >3000 rpm to keep in peak torque range.

2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel Quadcab Shortbed 4x4 (no power enhancers yet)
2005 Solaris Lite T-2363
Empty 18MPG
Towing 10.5 to 13.5 depending on speed, wind and mountains. 60 to 65 is the best speed for mileage (keeping the RPM around 1800 to 1900). This is with the automatic (48RE) in overdrive (4th) and the 5.9L. Cummins.
Plenty of power in the Rockies, was a little worried but was passing passenger vehicles that had a hard time making it up mountain passes.
Would like to get a mileage/power programmer and then compare. (also the torque converter is wayyyyy too inefficient/loose, another modification to add to the to-do list!) The converter won't affect freeway mileage but help with in-town mileage and acceleration efficiency.
Don

We just got back from a trip to Tennessee... 423 miles each way. Even with the hills, we averaged 10.5MPG towing the F-344SR. I was surprised, since I've never really been able to check the mileage as accurately. Usually, I run a bunch of my "Home brew" fuel and we don't tow far enough to have actual pump-to-pump numbers.
Empty, the dually gets 14-18MPG depending on how I drive it. Personally, I was impressed with the 10.5.... The F-344SR scales out at around 12,000lbs...

1997 Sunline Solaris 2653
2012 Toyota Tundra 5.7L Dbl Cab 8' Bed 4x4
Just back from Bar Harbor Maine. I paid $4.02/gallon at a needed stop in NY. Ouch! Worst part was I made it thru CT thinking I was headed for cheaper gas, doh!
Averaging about 60 mph I averaged about 10.8/mpg
Really like this Toyota

Ditto for us on the Tundra. Markbrit you have the same set up as us, only our TT is a 2000 and our TV is a 2008. Towed it last night to a campground about an 1 hour north for my wife, daughter-in-law and grandson. They are enjoying the camping and I will join them tomorrow night.

CT gas tax 50 cents per gallon. Tundra "ditto" on like. I have 2005 double cab.
Earlier comment in this thread mentioned gas at $2.35/gal. Oh well.

2001 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.9L. Factory tow package.
Regular MPG: Not sure. It's a farm truck and almost always has a payload. It rarely leaves town unless it's hauling. I'll hazard a guess at around 14.
Towing: About 9 MPG.
Plowing Snow: Awful. I don't even want to know.
