The Legal End
#1. Hi everybody, havent been on in awhile. Getting ready to plan my vacation to MA. My question here is, do I have to stop at a weigh station whenever I see one? My truck weighs 7,000lbs and the camper is about 8,000. With a GVWR of 15,000lbs. Im traveling from New Jersey threw Connticcut to end up in Massachuetts. My question is not limited to just these states. I have residental (non commercial) plates so I am assuming not.
#2. Is there a more likely chance of being pulled over my the cops with a travel trailer. I have all paper work legally and not oversized. Just wondering if you have ever seen wise guys out there. Going to have 6 people in my truck 3 up front, 3 in the back. Its a 4 hour drive. So I see no issue.
Im a person that worries alot and would like to have all the answers before a situation arrises, even if it the situation would never exist!!
Thanks in advance for any help regarding this topic.

I'm going to say no because you do not fall under interstate commerce. Case in point a standard drivers license allows one to drive a 48' motor home.

I agree with mainah. I know RI is agressive with stopping and inspecting commercial trucks I have never seen them stop a camping trailer. In MA the only time I ever saw a State Police car stopped behind a camper he was helping change a trailer tire.

Retired PD, quota is a myth. Speed is not or improper lighting that is probable cause catch a lot of bad guys that way.

Another thing to watch out for is tunnels (like harbor tunnels) they usually don't allow propane cylinders.

OK, where did you see states that do not allow trailers? What context is this in? And what do they define a trailer as?
I do not know every states laws, but know several of the OH laws.
Here in OH, the max speed limit for towing a camper or any trailer non commercial is 55 mph after you exceed a weight rating. And I my case, my camper trips that limit. It did with the T2499 as well.
OH does not have annual state inspections on vehicle. That said, out on the highway they do, do random checks at least they say they do. I have not found one yet in the last 12 years. BUT if for some reason you get stopped, they have been known to look. Make sure all DOT lights on the camper work, saftey chains or cables hooked up and the emergency breakaway switch. Those are easy violations to spot
States like NY and PA have annual inspections.
Weigh stations are for commercial vehicles here in OH. Again, key being commercial.
Propane and tunnels, that is something to check. Some places restrict this. The PA turnpike I believe has this on the western end of the state.
This site has some good info that was linked earlier, however I do not know if it is all gospel

I'm only speaking for OH again. Actually, OH does have some Interstate rest stops where you can camp over night. Some are up on I80. There are not that many of them, but they do exist.
Here is another site about towing laws by state. Again, may not be gospel but make you think about it and may need to get it checked out by your local state highway patrol

Quite a few states have no camper trailer roads some no motor home roads. Many years ago I got kicked off a NY road at a toll barrier in the middle of the night.

The only time you have to pull into a weigh station is if you have A DOT number on the truck. Or if you are a pull for hire, but even then you need a DOT number. so have fun and be safe.

I-95 & I-895 do not allow propane in their respective tunnels in Baltimore. I-695(The Beltway around Baltimore) is the alternate for I-95.
