sunline fan and other ford v-10 owners
how does everyone like their v-10,I had a 99 superduty v-10 before my diesel but never towed with it,As much as I like my dodge I'm thinking of going back to a v-10 mostly because I really would like to switch to an automatic trans and for the mileage I put on my designated tow vehicle I can't justify another diesel,my dodge is an 04 and has 11,900 miles on it and that is all towing or hauling, except for the first 500 miles, how do those v-10's handle a load on hills,I could care less about fuel milage, just looking for a good strong tow vehicle.

Hi Rich,
Well, I think the V10's are a little on the sluggish side when pulling heavy loads. If you don't try to gain some speed before a big hill, you're almost guaranteed to drop down to third, maybe even second. I can only speak on the 3.73 rear end, but just for towing purposes, I'd recommend at least a 4.10.
However, I know Ford redesigned the V10 to a new 3-valve design and I really haven't heard anything about it. In your case, I think you'd be better off with a gasser since you put on so few miles, unless you could find a dependable broken in diesel.
Jon

I bought a 2005 Sunline 2499 this year and then I had to buy a tow vehicle. I had a lot of inner battles as what kind of tow vehicle to get. It seemed a common theme that it needed to be a heavy duty vehicle because of the tongue weight of a 2499. I could not afford a diesel so I chose a low milage ford excursion with a V10. I have been very pleased so far. When I retire and travel out west I will probably go for a diesel but It does just fine for the 8 or so trips a year I get to use it.

I forgot to mention , I do have the towing gears 4:30's , it would be a different story without them I am sure.

FYI – Starting in 2007, I belive states that follow the California emissions rules are inhibited from selling the V-10 engine in a ¾ ton truck. I think you can only get the V-10 in a 1 ton truck in those states.
I’m not sure what states are following the California emissions rules now. I believe New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine are states that currently follow the California emissions rules and New Jersey, Rhode Island and Connecticut are considering it.
I was considering a F-250 with a V-10 when looking for a new tow vehicle and looking at ordering a 2007 and came across this here in NY.
It's something you may want to check into.

thanks everyone for the replies,I found a real nice 2001 v-10 f 250 lariat, only downfall is it only has the 373 gears but if they are not enough I could always change them, these used v-10's are hard to come by,and new is out of the question this time for the little bit I will use the truck.I think this truck will pull every bit as good as my sick dodge,Ever since I had the truck a year it has been down on power when towing,it has some kind of a fuel supply problem and nobody can figure it out,It's been to dealers several times with sunline in tow I have spent a good bit of money on it myself and it still is not right, dealers just keep saying it's got nothing wrong but I know how this thing towed before whatever happened.now don't get me wrong it still does decent but it is not right and after 3 yrs. of it I'm tired of it,also my dodge has been my baby since I got it and I'm afraid to use it as a truck because of denting, scrathing or nicking something,if I get a used truck that already has a few scratches well then I don't have to de so fussy with it and I can use it as a truck.sorry for the long rant but I have been pulling my hair out about what to do with my dodge but at this point I feel it's gotta go.

When I found my Dodge I was also looking for a good tow vehicle. My truck has 3.55 and it doesnt seem to matter all that much it pulls fine. I pulled a 10000lb tractor and trailer combo and it ran down the road just fine. And look at all the money you saved not buying the diesel. They cant give v10's away down here in Florida. They dont get the best mileage but if you are towing you arent going to win any mileage contests.

thanks for all the info jon, well I'm getting the 01,but you are correct that 99 I had was lower on power then the 2000 and newer ones,I never towed with my 99 because it was a 2wd and I could not get my camper out of my yard with it,so after just 4 months of owning it I traded it on my dodge, that 99 seemed pretty strong empty,It's tough because I don't want another diesel,I don't want a new truck,I don't want a gm product so it only really leaves the ford v-10,I know i'm gonna miss the torque of the diesel but with the way my truck was running If I got on a decent sized hill and did not have momentum it was pedal to the metal with that thing just to do the speed limit, then it would not excellerate anymore,so if the v-10 performs about like that I will be happy, not to mention the money I will be saving every month ,You got a heavier vehicle and camper then me jon so from by what your saying I think I will do ok,the 2001 is a supercab shortbed,4x4,lariat.my dodge is the ST trim so it has manual windows, locks etc,so the creature comforts are gonna be nice in the ford.

Nice Truck!!!
I have also recently, today actually, acquired a similar setup. I can’t report yet on the towing, but by the numbers, the V10 is a good option in the older 2 valve and newer 3 valve engine pending the loads you are pulling.
I have a camper friend pulling his 34 foot Jayco, 9,200# TT with a 2005 V10 in his EX. However he only has the older 2 valve engine. This spring he did upgrade from the 3.73’s to the 4.30’s when he went to his new camper. It was about a $1500 conversion for him in a 4 x 4. He has taken it out west and reported the rear end change was well worth it in his application. 9,200# TT, 9200# truck = 18,400# GCW
Mine has the newer 3 valve V10, the 5 speed tranny and the 4.10 rear end and it is rated at 21,000 GCWR. The 4.30 in the newer engine kick’s it up to 23,000#. For my setup I do not think I yet need to go all the way to the 4.30 but it is an option that us Ford folks have if you want to invest in it.
Question is, what is your total combined weight all loaded ready to go and how much reserve do you have? The older 2 valve engine from my buddies 2005 EX is rated at 17,000# on the 3.73 and 20,000# on the 4.30’s. Check you manual on what yours is rated at. I do not have ready access to the 2001 specs. Point being, the ratings are real. If you are under GCWR by a fair amount, then hills or flats can be overcome here on the east coast and some west coast trips. If you are doing mountians all the time, well there is where the air super charged diesels have the advantage. Again key is to line up the ratings to give yourself a chance.
Good luck with your new truck. Is sure looks nice in your pic.
John

Don't fear the Gear!!!
Gear swaps are somewhat expensive but, when towing, they can make all the difference. I'm seriously considering at least 4.10s or possibly 4.30s for my 2007 F150. Any truck, like this, that cruises at 60 mph in OD and only turns 1500 RPM needs some serious gears. The stock 3.73s are OK, but 4.10s are better yet! Many that have gone to lower gears have reported an increase in fuel mileage, likely due to less trans downshifting.
I rode in a Class C on an Econoline V10 chassis and I can tell you that it had a LOT of power. I would be willing to bet it had 4.30 gears.

Rick,
The E-450's have 4.56 gears.

I just wanted to add that by next camping season the 3:73 gears will be replaced by 4:30's,John the gcwr on my truck is 17,000 with the 3:73's with the 4:30's it jumps to 20,000,the gvwr is 8800 lbs and my payload is 2146 lbs(according to the certificate in the glove box for the camper package)I have never weighed my sunline ready to travel but I'm guessing to be around 7500 lbs and If I subtract the 2146 payload from the gvwr that puts the truck weight at 6654 lbs, anyway that puts me at 14154 lbs plus the stuff I haul in the bed of the truck and the family in the truck is probably another 1000 lbs, putting me at 15154 lbs, even if these numbers are a bit low I should still be fine with 3:73 gears but to play it on the safe side I'm gonna drive the truck over the winter then come early spring I'm gonna switch to the 4:30 gears then I know I will have plenty of room to spare. We don't camp in the mountains alot maybe twice a year so that's not an issue for me.I also only tow about 2500 miles a year.ok John so where are the pics of your new TV.
