Shopping Tires and wheels

Looking at tires and wheels for my new 2499. Radial vs Bias? Comments and suggestions please? Found these by clicking a banner on this page. Free shipping, no tax, and 5% off. Never heard of Kenda tires? Not sure of the center hole size? Thanks

"3-5 years is the expected life of a trailer tire" Why do I get the feeling that at least part of that is driven by their desire to sell more tires? Yes, I'm a major cynic.

I can remember when we got our first Kevlar vests back in the 80's. It wasn't until years later, and apparently the initial rush of sales had diminished, the manufacturers starting saying all bulletproof vest must be replaced every 5 years. Just think of the extra money that mandate must have made? We're still testing some of those vests after 25 years and we've yet to see one fail with normal handgun ammo. On the other hand we've found some rounds go right through vest's whether they're old or new. But I digress, lol.

After a lot of reading, I'm leaning toward an LT tire, especially due to the speed rating, and I can't help but think that the standards required of trailer tires are not as stringent as LT tires. I have 10 year old Firestones on my Duramax ( I bought as new takeoffs that had been in storage) and they look fantastic at half tread after about 40,000 miles.

If you do go ST, get the best one you can and replace them every five years. LT is definitely a good option though.

I replaced the wheels and tires on mine last year with aluminum rims and Goodyear Marathons, which I got mounted and balanced for a great deal from Tredit Tire & Wheel. They were the OEM supplier to Sunline and supply many manufacturers, and they have a huge variety of choices at good prices. They are right there in Lancaster. Worth giving them a call to price out, even if just for wheels.

Joe
I agree w/ you that info is given to sell more tires

In addition to "3-5 yrs being the lifespan of tires", they also state "5-12k is mileage expectation" If that were case I'd need to replace mine every other time I made a cross-country trip (if not sooner)

Apparently it's the UV that does the damage. Storing indoors or covered really helps.

My new unit has radials with (get this) Nitrogen fill. I don't know the pro's and con's of Nitrogen but.............

When I found the tires a few pounds low, Did I:

1-grab my portable compressor and top them off in a few minutes
2-Hooked up and spent a Saturday towing the unit all over town looking for someone who has nitrogen.

You guessed it.

We used nitrogen at the racetrack, mainly because we thought the molecules being bigger would prevent tires from bleeding off pressure in the very soft compound tires. We really didn't find much advantage with it and just went back to good old air. (which is 80% Nitrogen anyway)

Nitrogen does not bleed off as fast, but if you check the air pressure religiously, you are just as good.
