Hey Don,
This Jasper isn't a rebuild. It consists of all new parts.. The guy did tell me that they charge a $2,000 core! He mentioned that if the rear "Grenades" they won't accept it as a core...
I'd like the warranty of the Jasper, but reality says go with option 2...

I reread the post and am a little confused
Is number 2 replacing the differential carrier and carrier bearings but no ring and pinion?
The Jasper unit is remanufactured. It will come with new ring and pinion, bearings, gasket, pinion seal, shims and misc. Not 100% sure on what they would do about the carrier, it depends if you have a limited slip or not. They are putting these new parts in a core, thats why there is a charge for it.
When they say "all new" then there wouldn't be a core. I just didn't want you to think you got a brand new rear diff. Sometimes the terms are thrown around by the person selling it and they aren't always black and white.
That is why I was suggesting #2 since it sounded like it was almost the same product for almost half the price.
Just trying to look out for your wallet

Gary, have you tried calling around to any boneyards to see if you can get a low mileage pull? Also try car-part.com.
I blew the front diff on my blazer thanksgiving weekend and found one in a yard 2 miles away for $150 with 80k on it. Everybody else was looking $400-600+. I kinda got lucky, but its worth a shot.

No LS on this truck.. The Jasper unit comes with new ring and pinion.. I knew it wasn't 100% new parts..

That's what I ended up going with.. The shop rebuilding the diff, is 50 miles from the shop working on the truck. They'll come pick the diff up and take it to their shop for the rebuild. They said approximately 7 days for the work and they'll deliver it back to the shop, where the truck is.

I called around and the lowest price I could get, was $1,500... NOT shipped! I'd have to come get it..

As long as the axle wasn't howling around 45 to 55 mph and changed pitch with throttle, then the ring & pinion are OK!
Good luck and let us know how it turned out!
Don

No howling at all... No noise at all...
The only indication of any trouble, was the feeling that something was on a bind, when I was taking off from a stop. Kind of like when you have a vehicle in four wheel drive and turn the steering wheel too sharp.. When the U-joints bind up a bit, as they are spinning.

Option #2 sounds pretty good to me Gary. I agree that a "new" Jasper unit would be ideal....but $3k is a lot of cash!!! The quote of $1500 on a U-Pull-it sounds pretty high, would you like me to call around here for you? Let me know.

Thanks Lowell,
I had them go with option 2 and it should be done next week. I'm also having it filled with 75w-140 full synthetic.. A lot of my friends use it and like it. Since they are going to have the axle apart, I'm also gonna have them put new parking brake shoes and new pads...
