Well I filled up today...for $2.99!!!! I couldn't believe I found it for under 3. Anyway, I recorded the mileage and I calculated once I got home. Here's the results:

21 days
161.7 miles between fill-ups
Fill-up today was 16.507 gallons

9.7958 MPG

I did forget to reset the computer when I filled up, so I don't know how the numbers compare to the computer. It now reads 10.6.

My V10 8.0L is the Dodge version. Those V10's are not going to win any gas mileage contests but they are powerful motors. If I drive around town I average 9.5 mpg. On the highway about 12 mpg and towing I get 9.5 mpg at 55 mph. The trick to getting better mileage with these engines is to be very easy on the right foot. We stayed in Black Rock Mountain SP GA over the holiday it is 2 miles straight up on a mountain switchback road. That v10 chug right up with little effort, they are great motors. I think you will like the engine. That is very pretty truck you have

Yep, I very rarely go above 2000 RPM from a start up. With my short, stop-and-go commute, I think I'd be at 6 or 7 if I started up like the normal MI driver.

Jon

P.S. Thanks for the kind comments.

JohnB is on a distinguished road
The Jury is still out on how well my 3 valve V10, 6.8L is on gas with the 5 speed, but this is what I have so far.

City/Highway: (Going to Work) Avg, 12.0 MPG It runs this fairly consistent. Goes up to 12.3 then down to 11.8 and back to 12.0. This is based on a whopping 2 tank fulls. So far the electronic reading matches very close to the pump/fill, get shocked with the price and divide method.

Highway: 12.5 MPG Based 130 mile trip. Doing 65 MPH on highway

Towing: In Tow haul mode. On a whopping 21 mile towing trip, going put put along to the DMV for a TT VIN inspection. 10.5 MPG. max speed. 55 MPH for about 2 miles of the 21. ( The state of OH will not trust any other state with a VIN printed on a title….one to many stolen vehicles I guess)

With the 18” tires, 4.10 rear end, in drive, non towing, the engine is turning approx. 1850 RPM ish. The gages are so course in graduations, is it an estimate. Since the steering column blocks the speedometer, I can just watch the tach and tell how fast I’m going.

I would not call this conclusive, but it is a start of the data gathering.

And on having a heavy foot, that goes with most any rear axle above 3.73 and even them with the larger motor. These 4.10/4.30’s etc, nurse it or hand over the cash at the pump.

The truck handled the trailer well for this 21 mile trip…. When the weather cooperates better, will tow more on the next available weekend.

John
