Nick,

I haven't had it at all, but my parents had two- in '98 and '00 Lincoln Navigators. They were both great TV's and had plenty of power, though the '98 was a little better. They towed our 2653 all over MI, all the way out to Maine, down to Kentucky, and everywhere in between. Both had the 5.4L. The Excursion and Super Duty 3/4 and 1 ton trucks offered the 5.4L, but I wouldn't recommend it for that, if you plan on doing any towing. I've actually heard the gas mileage solo is sometimes worse with a 5.4L Excursion than the 6.8L Excursion.

Nick,

We had a 1998 Ford E-150 Conversion Van with the 5.4L Triton that we used primarily for towing our Sunline T-2670. Excellent engine. We took a trip out west, Yellowstone, Glaser, Canadian Rockies, etc. towed the trailer with no problem. I was very pleased with the engine, it performed extremely well.

If you’re looking at a ½ ton truck, van or SUV, it’s an excellent engine. Not sure how it is in a ¾ ton truck.

This is the situation.
I am going to be moving out west in the next few years
I would like to have a 4x4
Most F150 4x4 sent to Florida are the decked out models.
There are alot of F250 xl model with 4 wheel drive.
Most have the 5.4l, I would like to get a diesel but with the new Ultra Low Sulfur Fuels many of the older diesels require a lubrication additive which most folks dont use (Power service, Stayadyne). So they are going to have injector problems and injector pump problems down the road.
Plus the 6.0l Powerstroke has had many problems.
So that leaves me with the 5.4l or the v10. I really dont need all the pulling power the v10 has( and god forbid the fuel costs). In 2005 the 5.4l was bumped up to 300hp I think that might work.I can get a used F250 4x4 with a 5.4l for about $15000 down here. I have to go and test drive one and se if I like it.
I buy the XL models becuase they are cheap and I use them in my company. My F150 is a really nice riding and comfortable truck. I will have to see if the same can be said about the F250

Nick,

It sounds like, for your situation, an F-250 w/ the 5.4L engine would work just fine for you.

Let me know how you find the ride difference between the F-250 and F-150. I found the F-250 a little rougher of a ride, but you have to expect that.

Our situation was a little different. Our E-150 w/ the 5.4L was struggling pulling our new Sunline, so I couldn’t see how the engine could perform much better in a F-250. I’ve always liked Fords for tow vehicles but got a great deal on a GMC 2500HD with D/A that I couldn’t pass it up.

Good luck.

I have the 250 Super Duty with the 5.4L and have had no problems with the engine. I have NOT been to the rockies yet but do travel to and thru West Virginia quite often, usually pulling a car hauler or camper. It does quite well on those mountains.
You WILL feel a huge difference in the ride going from a 150 to a 250. The 250 is great for shaking those kidney stones loose. Granted, it does ride smoother with a trailer behind it. The 5.4L (call me silly) seems to perform better with a load than it does without one. It seems to run smoother and stronger when more torque is applied. M&S

I have to agree, my Ex does ride better with a load. It feels like it sticks to the road a lot better and handles the bumps better. I feel like the engine is straining though when even under a small load. You step on it and it downshifts to fourth or third and doesn't get going like it seems like it should.

Well I stumbled upon a differant truck. My local cargo trailer guy was selling his truck. 1999 Dodge 2500 V10 Quad door it has 75000 miles and in very good shape. He started at $8900 and we ended up at $6250. Seems folks didnt care for his big V10. It has tons of power it will go buy everthing but a gas pump. I will take the $10000 dollars I saved and give it to Chevron

Nickster,

Congrats on the new truck. I'm sure you'll love it. Sounds like you got a good deal too.

I went over to pick up a tire for my work trailer and was taking to the owner. He was complaining that everyone that looked at the truck didnt like the V10 becuase of mileage concerns. He didnt advertise the truck he just had it sitting out in front of his place. He didnt know I was in market for a truck. Well to make a long haggling story short I gave him the $ 6250.00 and I was happy, he wasnt. I think the little t-1950 feel like it isnt there.
