Driving in Ohio....

Ok, we're heading out to Ohio in a couple months, so I'm starting my planning early.

Does OH have any screwy driving rules (no right on red, no passing on right, trucks/ campers limit of 55 vs 65 (like NY) no typing on a laptop with one hand while eating a cruller with the other while talking on a handheld cell phone stuck under the edge of your ballcap while reversing across 4 lanes of traffic???) that I should know about?

I can handle anything, but I KNOW the speed laws in OH are pretty harshly enforced in some areas.... we'll be just Northeast of Akron.

Thanks for any input!

Greg

I do not know if these are unique to Ohio and most states may have adopted them already. I’m only an import to Ohio now going on 18 years.

Head lights must be on if windshield wipers are on.

We do have right on red. The intersection is marked No Right on Red, if you cannot turn there.

The speed limit, I do not know if this is an Ohio thing as MA use to do it too when I lived in the area. Watch the speed limit, especially in small towns. That little sign of 25 MPH jumps out of no where. It seems we go on 25 or 35, there is not a lot of 30 MPH. So they can get ya going 30 in town. This 25 in town seemed unique as compared to NYS where in town is generally 30.

Seat belts a must.

Cell phones. Suppose to have a hands free device if you are the driver.

If I think of any more, I’ll post back

John

Greg,

How NE are you talking from Akron? My aunt lives in Stow, which is about 10 miles NE.

John, thanks for the help! It still amazes me there needs to be a law for headlights with wipers.... Thanks also for the 25 heads-up. Our immediate area is a lot of either 20 or 35, not too much in between- but they won't grab ya for anything less than 15 over most of the time.

Jon, we'll be in West Branch State Park in Ravenna from 9/9 to 9/14. It's due East of Stow on SR 5.

...the world gets a step smaller everyday

Later,

Greg

Ah West Branch, home of some of the newest and cleanest rest room/bath houses in the Ohio state park system.

Here is a pic from that park. It is beautiful

Camping at West Branch

And here is the view looking out the back window of the camper on that campsite.

Now that we know where you are going.....and in Ohio,

Heads up, there is one of the nastiest high up RR track crossings going into that park from the north end of the lake heading to the south about 1 to 2 miles from the camp entrance. If you go the wrong way in you will never forget it. That lift kit of yours will be just in time....

That crossing is the kind you can tear up drag V bars or break a hitch on coming off of. The digs in the black top prove it..... I cannot remember the exact little road that hill is on, but when you find it, you will know. and not forget...

If you are coming in off of I76 and come from the south end going north on Rock Spring road to Esworthy into the campground, then you will miss them.

I do not know if this link will fire. It is map quest showing the RR tacks near the park. Zoom in a click or 2 until they show up. They run the length of the lake on the east side. Avoid those tracks with the camper. West Branch Tracks

And have a great time. That is a beautiful park about 2 1/2 hours from home.

John

PS The wipers and heads is law in NYS as well.

Greg,

If you plan on taking the NYS Thruway, the speed limit is 65 mph (cars / trucks, trailers, etc.). Like everything else in NY, the Thruway tolls just went up

PA is very tough on speeders also, stay within the speed limit when passing through PA.

Ohio -

I live about 30 minutes from there.
Ohio-
No u-turns,
hands free cell phone is dependent on the community
Never ever speed in a work zone - '
and if you go traveling and go through a nearby town of Mantua - DO NOT SPEED
they will tag you for 3 miles over the 25 mhp speed limit.

My old PA versus OH joke is that you have to look out for the Ohio vehicles (which have no state inspection) as they might break down right in the middle of the highway.

Living in Michigan for most of my life and making many trips through Ohio, we learned real quick that you NEVER speed through that state.

I've been pulled over in Ohio more times than I'd like to remember. Many times for doing only 5 over the speed limit. Somthing that would get you run off the road for in Michigan or Florida

Play it safe and follow the posted speed limit!
