winterizing the water heater

Starting to think about winterizing the the Solaris T2363. I know I need to drain and bypass the water heater. Should I put a little anti freeze in it ? Should I put the drain plug back in or leave it open til spring? Also should I store the propane tanks somewhere, or leave them hooked up? Thanks!

Winterizing

Hi, no need for anti-freeze in the water heater, as long as it's drained fully. Make sure to put the drain plug back in so that you lose it. As for the propane tanks, leave them on the trailer, just make sure to shut them off. Put plastic over all places where you think that bugs or critters might get in. Ie, water heater, storage compartments, vent for refrigerator. Pump a couple of gallons of R/v antifreeze in to the water system, put out a couple of ant cups and say goodnight till spring..
Hope this helps some. Have a good winter.

The first time I did this I was nervous. Once or twice then it will be second nature.

Drain

Look to the left side of the water heater, you'll see a large nut close to 1" around. Carefully remove it and let the heater drain fully . Blowing out the whole system with air drains it faster. Hope this helps!

No matter what you do the tank will not be empty that however is not a problem what is left will freeze but it will not damage the tank because there is room for expansion.

I usually siphon out what's left in the bottom of the tank, just to be sure. Also, be sure to drain the low-point drains if you have them. I do the winterizing a little different. I remove the water line on the supply side the pump and replace it with a hose leading into a gallon of RV antifreeze, and turn on the pump.....it does the rest. Turn on each faucet beginning with the furthest away (on my 2553 it is the kitchen) and then turn it off again. I also open the faucet at the outdoor faucet. This has worked well for me for 13 years. Be sure to add some antifreeze in eachdrain to protect the traps.

Our trailer was ordered with the "winterizing kit" from the factory. It consists of a two way valve in the line between the fresh water tank and the pump. The second port on the valve has a short piece of tubing attached to it. On our unit the pump and this kit is under the kitchen sink. To winterize I remove a drawer next ot the sink, pull out the hose and place it into the gallon of anti freeze, flip the valve, turn on the pump, and open each valve as above. I also have an air fitting that screws into the city water connection, attaching an air line at 40 psi and blowing out the water first, then pumping in the anti-freeze (ok, it's double protection), With the hot water heater bypaased, I can do my 28 foot coach with a little less than one gallon of antifreeze..

Yes mine has a 2 way valve also and I use air but I only suck up enough antifreeze to fill the pump I hate the taste of that stuff. I use the end of an old garden hose with an air chuck fitting in it connected to my compressor. A gallon lasts me two years after the pump is full I dump some in the drains after I blow them out too. I will add I do have all the stuff needed to do all this and know what it takes to do the job so if you are new to this follow online instructions.

It's in the street side peg board tool cabinet. You'll need a #3 Robertson or square screwdriver to remove the screws holding the shelf on the left side. The hose sticking out of the hole on the shelf is the winterizing hose, but you still need to remove the shelf to turn the winterizing valve.

The shelf is a nuisance, but I always put it back as it cleans up the area quite a bit. Thread the screws far enough that you can catch the original holes when re-installing.
