Winterizing the potable water tank

We have a 1985 Sunline T-1350 (one of the smallest travel trailers). We were advised by the previous owner "not to pour the RV anitifreeze" into the potable water tank. He says that it will be very difficult to flush it out completely with water. We live in Maryland, and he says that he has never had a problem with the potable water tank freezing and cracking???

We have followed all of the steps on winterizing our travel trailer except the potable water tank. What is recommended?

The previous owner is correct, the taste and odor of pink RV antifreeze is hard to get rid of.

Completely drain the tank using the outside drain. If the tank runs parallel to the long axis of the trailer, raise or lower the nose to get as much out as you can.

Since you have already winterized the rest of the TT, you're pretty much all set. I do the same thing. I disconnect the water line from the tank to the pump when I winterize because I never got around to installing the winterizing kit. Since I have already drained the tank, I raise the pump end of that hose up a bit so it drains.

What little water is left in the tank and hoses can not break anything when it freezes. The drain line on mine is a soft plastic and won't break. In both hoses, any residual water won't matter because it is a small amount and is not confined. When it freezes, it can expand lengthwise in the hose and not break it.

I leave the drain open all winter. When I de-winterize, I fill the tank part way to do the clorox sanitize routine. I don't close the drain valve until I am sure that it has flushed any bugs, etc. out of the drain line.

That's it.

Welcome Montim to Sunline Owners Club!

I agree with Steve, I see no need to put the pink antifreeze in the fresh tank and it will be hard to dilute/flush it out of there if you did. A few reasons adding to what Steve noted.

Some plastics hold the odor of the liquid in them a really long time. I do not know what type of plastic your tank is made from but if it is one of the softer plastics it can absorb a smell that is very hard to get ride of. I do not know what plastic Sunline used in 1985 tanks.

The actual water lines in the camper, at least on the new rigs, is made from PEX tubing and it is different material that resists the absorption of smells in most cases.

While we use the air blow out method in the fresh system as we use the camper all year I, have used the pink stuff before and would still use it if I needed to. Like Steve said you have to deal with the pump and by taking the suction hose off and blowing backwards into the tank it will drain out any water in that line. Odds are very high it will just plain drain by itself once unhooked as the hose is now vented once you unhook it. In my case my suction hose runs across the floor of the camper for several feet and I help it drain with an air assist. My setup may be unique as the original Sunline setups I have seen seem to come straight up our of the floor so a gravity draining should do it. If your is very much straight up it should helps do it all on it’s own.

If you want to help insure your tank is empty., lay a 2 x 8 or some other board on the ground on the opposite side of the tank drain and drive the TT the hill on that one side. This tips the tank towards the drain and will help get that last bit out.

Hope this helps and good luck with your camper.

John

Ditto for the water heater. Drain it and set the by pass so you don't fill it with antifreeze. I assume you've already been there.
