winterizing in NY
Hi
New to owning my 2003 sunline solaris!! I have no idea how to winterize and I live in NY!!! time is closing in as it is getting close to freezing at night up here...My question is what do I need to do in order to keep my camper safe and dry till next season?
it stays outdoors at a camp site on Cayuga Lake. It did have a leak that was repaired this summer but I was thinking of tarping it just to be safe any suggestions??
Really looking for a list to print out so that I can go through all the steps

The best and fastest solutions for winterizing can be found on YouTube.com. That way you can see the process. It isn't hard to do but very necessary! As far as the tarp, I don't usually recommend them but because the rv is fairly new to you,it may be a good idea and give you peace of mind!!.

I know RV covers can be expensive, but they are a better option than a tarp. Being in the RV tech business when going over a trailer I can tell right away if it has been covered with a tarp because all the trim at any corner is worn down to bare metal and the vent lids look like they were sand papered. Plus tarps trap moisture.

I had a small MH and I made short "saw horses" and put them on the roof then put the cover on it allowed me to open the vents and give a slight pitch to the cover. My T1700 lives in the barn! I agree with the tarp they trap moisture you really should use a proper RV cover.

Hi Klew,,
I'll offer a hand on the search, try this
winterize - Google Search
That is using our Google Custom search feature. It produces easier results the the actual site search feature. Here book mark this for future searches
Google Custom Search for SOC
Here is another good resource, our files section. On the top of the forum page is a tab called "FILES" click it and all kinds of good stuff shows up. Here is a hot link Sunline Coach Owner's Club - Sunline Owner's Files
You need to be logged in to use it and then download files. If you go into the "Sunline Tips and Guides" section there is a Sunline Winterizing Guide you can download with step by step instruction.
I will add one more thing, your mentioned a leak, going into the winter season with the camper living out side it is a good practice to inspect the roof caulking now before winter sets in. Fix "now" any tiny slits or splits in the caulking. Then come spring, do an inspection again. If there are tiny splits in the caulking now, water can get in them, freeze and widen the split. This can keep going on over time to where that tiny split turns into a full blown crack that later opens up to let water get in.
Here is one "How to" method and it shows how prepare for walking on the roof and not come through. Most Sunlines TT's do not have walk on roofs and we need to take precautions to not damage the camper or worse, you. http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...1-a-11508.html
Hope this helps and good luck
John

Klew,
Like everyone else has already said, google, youtube, and this forums "winterize" threads.
One more option is having a local dealer do it or search Craig's list. There is usually always someone on CL that will do it for you and not charge a ton of money. I'm sure you can handle it yourself. Do it one time and you got it.
Tarping is not the best option. For $300 to $400 you can get a quality RV Cover and they are much better than any tarp. More $$$ but you get what you pay for and it's worth every cent just for piece of mind.

Ah yes it was a sad day I finally had to give in an winterize my T1700 I checked around and pretty much all the state parks closed on the 19th here in the north east. Even some times in the winter I will go out and sleep in it for the night as long as it's above zero!

Yep, I've winterized my units also.....but I'm camping..... in my back yard. Like you Tim, I will sleep in it until it gets just too cold. I was hoping to get in one more outing, however, I just have too many other chores needing to be done.

On the subject of winterizing. The 2 places I always miss until I look at my list is the outside shower and the one you never hear about is the refrigerator condensate tube. I had mine crack at the trap bend.

Before you look at youtube, determine if you have a bypass on your water heater first. Don't forget the Dryer sheets spread around drawers and closets and outside compartments. it really works. I've never seen as much as a spider in any compartment.
You can search this forum too for many tips on winterizing.
