Where to find trim?

I need to remove some trim to get at screws to rebuild the back right of my Sunspot. It's easy to see once I start it's going to come out in brittle pieces.

Am I going about this the wrong way?

Or is this normal, and I can get trim like this somewhere and it goes in fairly easy?

Both pieces of vertical wood on the right side need to be replaced (next to the frame and the corner of the trailer), as well as the top horizontal piece. Then I need to install new luan. This all started when I removed carpet from the walls. Carpet on walls?!? It's coming along though.

Any tips on this trim would be greatly appreciated!

Frank

Frank,

The screw cover is a common and cheap item. I've even seen it in the WallyWErld camping section, atleast camping supply stores. I have replaced lots of it that had 'shrinked', nothing to it. Just pry it out and the new is flexible enough to slide back in place by folding over and letting it expland in the side slots.

Excellent! I figured as much Jim, so ripped it out! Really, I had no choice, so figured I could cover it with something.

I have now also removed the aluminum channel it fit into, and am almost ready to start fashioning some pieces of poplar to replace the rot. Most of my time so far has been removing rusty staples, or the remains of such.

I almost wonder how difficult it would be on a tiny travel trailer like a Sunspot to at some point take all the siding off, rebuild the wood, re-insulate, replace damaged panels and put it all back together? I think there's a lot of silicone on "stuff" all over this trailer.

Thanks for the help.

Frank

What you are stating is very doable. And since you have the wood working skills you can do this. However it does take time. The siding is stapled on and getting it off without ripping the siding takes time. Looks like this. You take the siding off from the bottom up

To install ideally you get an air stapler. See here

This is a perfect reason to get a new tool!

Actually John, I'm just interested in getting the new tool...

So far, so good. It just seems to be a very methodical thing. Remove stuff, clean up, re-assemble, and do NOT use silicone products.

Thanks for the pictorial. We'll see how things go, but I wouldn't mind doing the whole trailer within the next year or two.

I'm cleaning surfaces now, will shape wood last, then re-assemble with butyl tape, and new phillips head screws to replace the old hex head ones. I also used a body dolly and hammer to flatten dimpled surfaces. I'm replacing all hardware I remove, nothing old is being used. I gotta get off the computer and get back at it!

Thanks,

Frank

I'm almost set to out things back together. Got a little more work to do before trimming wood pieces for re-assembly.

Took John's advice and got an air stapler for the kind of staples used in the trailer. Also today got our new bed foam in (mail order) and a couple rolls of butyl tape at a local RV place. Foam came in perfect size: 54" long (width of our full size bed). Each piece is 24" wide, so will need to be trimmed for that dimension, and is 3" thick hi density. Upholstery material on the foam is what it will be covered with, picked that up at a local fabric shop Sunday.

Looked at 3/4" plywood today for the bed/seat bases, probably use oak in AC grade. Once I get everything back together, I'll move to bed construction.
