Water heater Bi-pass failure

So the first trip out this year, weather was perfect, company was awesome, drinks were flowing and so was the steady drip from my water heater bi-pass valve. At first I thought it was just the drain plug in the water heater since I was too lazy to take it back out before I left and add some pipe dope. But no, it was coming from my 3-way bi-pass valve. It looks like it had developed a slow but steady drip where the stem meets the valve body.
Anyway, I am now looking to replace the bi-pass valve plumbing and wondering if I should just buy one of those kits or just buy 3 valves and make it myself.

What have you all done that you would recommend?

Thanks
Tom

The later ones only had one valve to turn. The hot line has a check valve in it and uses a tee to connect the bypass pipe. The check valve will only allow water to flow out of the heater, so when the bypass valve is opened, the water is diverted up the bypass pipe and the check valve blocks it from flowing in the hot side.

Mark the positions on the valve with a Sharpie and you have a much simpler setup!

Oh Ok, now it makes more sense. I found a post where JohnB shows his setup and I could not figure out how he was only using 1 valve.

I'm on my phone and it's a pain to find pics, but you found the one I was going to look for tomorrow. Glad to help.

BTW - when the handle points to the heater it's not bypassed. When it points to the bypass pipe it's bypassed.

Tom
The 3 way valve is on the bottom and the brass check valve on the top. It came from Sunline this way.

They do work like that but they also have problems sometimes. If I myself was going to buy a new pass I would go to the 2, 3 way valve setup like you linked too on Amazon.

The issues with the 1, 3 way valve and the top check are:

A. The check will not seat and seal off and you end up putting antifreeze in the HW heater anyway.

B. The check valve will not open. It stays stuck shut and no water comes out. Take discharge pipe off, give it a poke and it works.

The issues with the 2 , 3 way valve?

A. Folks do not know which way to turn the valves and get frustrated. Like Mack said, mark the valves which way the handles are suppose to point to for HW heater flow or bypass.

Good luck and hope this helps

John
