They do work like that but they also have problems sometimes. If I myself was going to buy a new pass I would go to the 2, 3 way valve setup like you linked too on Amazon.
The issues with the 1, 3 way valve and the top check are:
A. The check will not seat and seal off and you end up putting antifreeze in the HW heater anyway.
B. The check valve will not open. It stays stuck shut and no water comes out. Take discharge pipe off, give it a poke and it works.
The issues with the 2 , 3 way valve?
A. Folks do not know which way to turn the valves and get frustrated. Like Mack said, mark the valves which way the handles are suppose to point to for HW heater flow or bypass.
