want to replace brake assemblies

hi I want to replace the 10 x 1.5" brake assemblies on our 1990 T170. complete units are cheaper than buying the shoes alone. seems they are not bolted onto the axle like the replacement units need to be. anyone have this issue before?

Yup. On my 1983 model T1550, they are welded on. I was looking to replace mine, but was told since my axle size is no longer made, parts were unavailalable. It's going to be easier and cheaper to replace the whole axle assembly. Just replacing bearings last year involved buying 3 different sets and doing a mix and match for the right sizes. The folks at Dexter Axle were very helpful, but eventually I'm going to have to think about parking it, or replacing the axle assembly.

There are some brakes reliners that will reline 10X1.5 shoes but not cheaply I did how ever find out from a brake company that the Dexter lining was not very thick to begin with not much over 3/16" so I just packed the bearings and adjusted the brakes hopefully they will last another 21 years!

yeah i bought 4 sets of shoes for $45ea cdn at my local rv dealer. turns out like you say they aren't very thick to begin with so I'm sure once they are adjusted properly everything will be fine. and I get $180 back in my pocket! thanks

bearings and brakes are done wheels back on, now i can't seem to get the axle nuts adjusted properly. either the wheel and the nut seem to tight or else, to get the nut backed off to the closest slot for the cotter pin i end up with wheel movement. 2 hrs of messing around resulted in me taking it to my mechanic for the final adjustments.

Wheel bearings have to have some play in order to get the grease to the bearings what I usually do is bring them up tight not with a wrench but lock pliers then back them off do it again and back up to the first slot you can get a cotter pin in. It is the best you can do, it is better to be slightly loose then too tight.

well now that is good advice but the best advice is test fit the bearings before they are packed and installed. seems I installed the wrong inner bearings, they were too big for the shaft. ugggghh! no wonder I couldn't get the nuts set properly. After 20 yrs of selling auto parts you would think i should know better. anyway, installed the proper inner bearing sets and axle nut adjustments were a breeze. thanks for your help though.

Oops. I think there is a difference in the bearings between the 10X2 and the 10X1.5 brakes.
