Vent Lid or Maxxair

I need to replace at least one of the original lids on the 3 roof vents in our 2499 and am wondering whether I should replace all 3. I still don't have Maxxair covers so that also figures in the plans. I also intend to replace the little whizzer fan in the bathroom with a full size one, possibly Fantastic or Maxxair, but that won't happen before fall/spring.

Anyway, there seem to be $10 plastic covers and $20 polycarbonate ones. Any experience with the polycarbonate? Are they worth the extra money or will a Maxxair cover help preserve the cheap plastic ones. The extra cost of the polycarbonate almost buys me half a Maxxair cover already.

Henry

Hi Henry

I have found that cheap vent covers still become brittle even when under a Maxx air cover that is untouched by the Sun effects. This happened on my T310SR.

I do not know if the cheap actually a defect or not. I happen to be a lucky one to get 2 batches of bad vents covers. During the 2004 year models Sunline changed vents suppliers. On my T2499, they started rusting within 1 year. Sunline was still in business then and they promptly sent me 3 new ones and I replaced them. However on the 2004 T310SR, well Sunline was not longer and I had to replace them. I went with Ventline. That trailer had Maxx Air’s on it must have been since new. Yet the vent cover under it was crumbled into almost a 1,000 tiny pieces.

The Maxx air covers are worth the money. They plastics they use holds up to the Sun. I do put 303 UV protectant on the inside and outside of the Maxx Air and the new vent covers I installed.

Since I bought mine, I found Camco makes a vent cover replacement with a lifetime guarantee. If I would of known of that, I would of went with them. http://www.camco.net/Menu.cfm?SupCat...ProductId=2193

The lifetime ones are listed as made out of polycarbonate. The also make a polypropylene but it does not have the lifetime warranty.

Polycarbonate is what Nalgen water bottles use to be made from or Lexan. Use to meaning they responded to the Bisphenol-A (BPA) situation where any food producers are now almost immediatly converting out of that plastic. However Polycarbonate is good stuff, just do not eat off of it…. Polycarbonate sheets are used for guarding in Industrial applications as it will not crack and when thick enough is very close to indestructible under semi normal conditions. If I remember right I though it would stop a 22 bullet.

Hope this helps

John

I have 2 Maxxair covers, one with the fan. They look and work great. the fan moves a lot of air and I use it a lot dry camping. I did not get the one with the thermostat because I need to control the fan while drycamping. One big advantage to both is that the vents can remain open even in the rain so go for the day and don't worry about it.

For the original vent covers, I'd go with the better materials. Cheaper is not always inexpensive.

One caution on the bathroom vent. With a fan you're probably close to the black water vent on the roof so you probably can't bring air in, only exhaust.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to get 3 polycarbonate covers and one Maxxair cover for now. After our OR trip I'll get the Maxxair fan as I won't have time to install it now anymore.

Two items from direct experience:

1. As someone has already said, if the vent is near the Black Vent Pipe, not just in the bathroom, it must be exhaust only. On our T-276SR the vent in the main compartment is less than 18" away from the black vent and Sunline would only install exhaust only.

2. Maxxair covers are not rain proof If a wind driven rain hits the "back" (louvered part) of the cover you will get water inside. We usually leave the vent open under the Maxxair to vent the coach. We had a severe thunderstorm that the wind blown rain was hitting the louvers and we had wet carpet, bed, etc. This has only happened once, but just be aware rain can get in them.
