trailer to TV connector

i noticed the other day that part of the rubber coating has pulled away from the connector end of the trailer connector - exposing the wires.

i hate to replace the entire connector - was thinking of using some heat sink tubing but not quite sure how to make this work --- my other option is electrical tape.

any other suggestions - besides removing it and replacing it - the cord itself is in good shape with no scrapes/cuts ---- as i often wash the cords and silicone them to keep them uv save.

ideas?

thanks

If the wires inside look good then electrical tape should work but my advise is to replace the cable. A short circuit may do more damage than just blow fuses and leave you without lights or brakes on a trip.

I have a copy of the Mobilife RV Centre 2007 RV Parts & Accessories catalog. This is a generic catalog that many RV dealers in Canada use and just print their own name on the cover. Try one of your local dealers and look on p. 181 for a number of products that should do this job better than electrical tape. Weigh the cost of any of this against a new cord too.

Then check if the old cord is plenty long enough and not binding anywhere on tight turns. This is a pretty unusual failure.

i have checked over the cord well - with the help of an electrician friend and we figured the cord covering was a bit shy of the length it should have been when they formed the plug on the end --- the wires are tight and everything is working --- so for now we added some electrical tape to close the gap - about 1 mm between the cord covering and the plug.

if i get any strange things happening like light flickering, breaks etc that old cord will go no matter the cost as it should be an easy replacement.

if you look in the catalog there is even a replacement kit with heat shrink provided - but i would prefer to replace the entire cord.

would be an easy repair afterall.

thanks for the info!

oh, i checked the length and i do think that it was too tight once as i found that it was wrapped oddly around the crank - so likely when i corned to put her in the driveway, it pulled - yikes - will definitely be watching that a bit closer.

When you jacknife around that tightly, you will most likely be in one of two places- a campground or your yard-

just unplug! Unless you need the lights to see, or are on a heck of a hill, you shouldn't need to have the 7 way plug tied in for those manuevers....

Think of it like the sway control bar, if you're jacking in tight, you'll probably be taking that off- so grab the plug while you're at it!

I just had to replace the cable after returning home from the Meet and Greet in PA. Seems we dragged it quite a ways along I-95 here in CT. I don't know if it shook loose on the bumps or came out on a sharp turn.

I had found it loose on the trip down and had put a wire wrap around it for the trip home but obviously that didn't work.

I was able to get a new 8 ft cable for $28 locally and installed it myself. This seems to be a standard length. "Next time", I buying the 11 ft cable to get an extra few inches for those tight turns.

I was really surprised to find that twist wire connectors, like you would use in home wiring, were used for all the connections except the electric brake.

For the elec. brake they used a crimped connection that was then filled with an insulating compound to keep out moisture. I used silicon sealant.

I'm going to be on the lookout for better connectors to replace the twist connectors.

While I was in the junction box I replaced their goop around the wire holes with grommets on two of the holes.

I also re-routed wires and installed clamps to support the wires in a couple of places, especially from rubbing on the gas lines behind the junction box.

If you've done any wiring, this was a fairly easy job (it was warm, it wasn't raining and I lots of time).

Craig

Re Henry's comment below: Now we know! You'd think it would be easy to add an alarm that would go off when a cable disconnected after being connected. Or is that in the next model up?

I've got a picture of my cable...trying to figure out how to post it.

Check Brake Controller

Craig,

you probably know this by now too... I habitually check the Prodigy display to make sure it's connected. But I only learned to do that after dragging a cable on our previous trailer. Been there, done that.

The brake controller I have in my truck,'Genesis' brand, flashes "OC" (open connection) for quite a bit after I unplug any of my trailers with electric brakes. I'm sure you could wire in an audible alarm(or have it done for you) to let you know your trailer's wiring harness has come disconnected.

It doesn't take long at all to wear down a trailer pigtail @ 65mph. I've let friends borrow trailers of mine and return with something that looks more like a $30 wedge to hold a door open than an adapter.

You might want to try an in line wire conntector with a shrink tubing heated over top of the connector. Make sure your shrink tubing is on the wire before making your crimps and that the tubing fits over the connector but isn't too wide that it won't shrink down onto the wire. Splice and crimp your wires, slide the tubing back across the connector so it overlaps onto the wires an inch or so and heat it with a flame... sealed.

Take care,
Jason
