Steps?
Looks like somebody left our steps down when driving off at some point. They're bent pretty bad, plus look like they're welded on, as well as bolted. We bought a single step step-stool for now, but how difficult is it to replace these babies? Break the welds, remove the door frame to get to the top of the bolts?
Thanks for any help!
Frank

Hey Frank,
Yep, they used to bolt the old steps to the floor for strength. I'm not sure if yours was hit, but it could just be a heavier person stepping on it a few years in a row that caused the bolts to get pulled in through the floor. If the floor has any rot right there, the bolts can get pulled through that way.
I guess to replace it, you would have to break the welds and pull the door frame off. Since it looks like it's pulling through anyway, that probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

Boy it looks like a one-time thing Jon, but sure could be what you describe as well. Seeing we're using a portable step for ingress/egress, I may as well break the welds, pull the door and see what's up. When I get a chance...
Started work on my 1947 Old Town canoe after work tonight (just getting it cleaned out) and have a date with a 135 hp Mercury outboard motor this week and weekend. I need to clean my shop bench and get that old crank and 6 pistons on my shop bench and do some cleaning and ring removing. The steps will take a good morning to do, and maybe a day, so it needs to be planned. Plus the steps are not critical, where the canoe and 135 hp outboard are right now.
Busy guy!

I agree with Jon, it looks like too much weight over time. That bend, as it looks in the picture, would not come from a side impact but downward force. Perhaps the result of those bolts pulling through a soft floor. I have managed to put bends in aluminum angle stock that look just like that ... without the rust.

I had a Sunline like that before that the step had bent down so much that it was angled away from the trailer. Very annoying to step in. Jacked it up with a floor jack, put new bolts in a little farther in, and it was nice and strong again, and straight.
On the other hand, the bottom step of my 286SR was like that when I got it. Never could figure out why, as the back door step wasn't like that. I just bolted a small bracket behind where the step folded down so it would rest on that straight. Painted it black and no one else would ever know.

I noticed my steps were sagging a bit too, mostly because of rot inside the door area. When the time comes I'm going to make some gussets up and weld them solid to the frame!
