They don't stock parts for them, but I should try again just to make sure.

Sounds like an obsolete 13MM to me they never were very popular. Lippert is a division of Drew Industries if that helps.

I'll have have to attend the next meet and greet and bring a allen key.

Now that's funny!

You are very welcome to come to the Mid-West M & G in September. While BenB's will be well cured on by then, you can arm wrestle with vanhakke (Denny) who has a 2007 T-286SR Sunline and J&A Lima (Jack) who has a 2007 T-2499 Sunline. Maybe we can even sweet talk Sunline Fan to come and bring his 2007 Trophy camper!

Just think, there are 4 of these bolts per stabilizer and 4 stabilizers per camper, and up to possibly 48 of them plus your 15 makes 63 of them! Why would you really need another one?

Here is some more info. I have a response back my machine shop guy, Dave.

Dave says:
Quote:
Goofy as it may sound, it might be a 9/16-20. OD is a little smaller, which explains the flat-top of the thread...now try and find one!

9/16-20 size of thread has been used as a lug size for automobile wheels...older cars. Have you tried going in to a Napa store?

9/16-20 LH and RH threads were used on 70's bicycle pedals...is one side LH? I know grabbing at straws...
I had a thought it might be 9/16-20 UN thread but I dismissed it due to the goofy OD. But Dave is right, the top of the threads are flat and they could of trimmed off 0.012" on the side and that would explain it.

Why did they trim it? The only thing that makes any kind of sense is they wanted a little more shoulder contact on the trunnion shoulder and the thread strength was plenty enough. That is a wild guess and the only thing that makes sense at this stage.

Why did they pick 9/16"? This is even wilder. Don't really know but bicycles pedals I do think still might be that size which is an overhung load situation all the time. Maybe they had that thought in their mind. Sort of clueless why they picked such an odd ball thread.

So how to fix this short of a machine shop buddy making you one assuming LCI won't sell you one.

Your helicoil thread idea has a lot of merit. http://www.noblefix.com/PDF/Helicoil...-Catalogue.pdf

If you pick a 1/2-20 Helicoil, the major diameter of the Helicoil tap is 0.569" which is only 0.009 over the 9/16 thread that is in there. (see page 17 of the PDF) And the helicoil tap is 20 TPI too. Heck you may be able to just screw a helicoil in there. You can try it, it may work without tapping. Or better, run the tap in. It will cut out what little slivers it can then screw in the helicoil and you have a usable thread.

Here is a kit on Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/Helicoil-5528...l+1%2F2-20+tap

A lot cheaper then just the tap at MSC
https://www.mscdirect.com/browse/tn/...ap&hdrsrh=true

Now to the spacer. If you start with a piece of 3/8 sch 40 pipe, the OD is 0.675" and the ID is 0.493". Just run a 1/2" drill inside it to open it up to go over a 1/2"-20 UNF socket head cap screw. The head diameter on a 1/2" socket head cap screw is 3/4" dia. so that will hold the bushing on well.

The OD of the pipe bushing, your going to have to grind down from 0.675 to 0.656 or take 0.010" off the side and it will fit. Here is where the buddy with the little lathe will come in handy but if you have a bench grinder you can work something for what this is doing.

You will probably have $40 in stuff to make one, with the tap being the biggest part of this and a lot of grumbling.... But look at it this way, there are 16 of these shoulder bolts on the camper. Your odds are another one may come off and it will be a lot cheaper to fix the next one.... Better get some blue loctite when your at the store.

Hope this helps

John

I dont think 9/16-20 is a common lug nut thread. 9/16-18 was used alot on older 8 lug trucks. 7/16-20 and 1/2-20 was used on cars and light duty trucks. Then mid 80 many started switching to metric threads.

Thanks John.

Trying a 1/2-20 helicoil without tapping sounds like the place to start for me. I should be able to get a few of them for a few bucks.

Looking online at parts, I was able to find 9/16-20 dies online for $10. Here is a plan that I can do at home if the helicoil fails. I don't have a lathe, but I'm good at turning things down by chucking them in a drill press and using a file. If I got a nice soft bolt, I could chuck the threaded end and turn the shank next to the head to the desired size and thread it. I would then have to also make the sleeve for the shoulder out of some other material because I can't chuck a bolt larger than 9/16.

Thanks for all the info, but especially the TPI info, I don't have a thread gauge. Any other ideas, fire a away, but this is very doable and wouldn't take long at all. I'll make a real pest fo myself Monday with Lippert and then move on. I'll let you all know.

Just to update.... I spent long enough on the phone with Lippert being a polite pest to be convinced that there were no parts available. The person I talked to went and found an old catalog and confirmed that they never sold the part I was looking for individually and her manager was sure the parts did not exist in inventory.

I contacted several salvage yards with photos and a request, but did not turn anything up.

I have a lot of snow piled up where I need to work and the forecast is for cold, so I'm paused on this for now.

I have run into that with LCI direct sales too. In my case I was fixing one of my neighbors LCI brakes on his Gulfstream camper. The magnet was all goofed up and worn. The wear messed up the lever arm too.

Well they do not sell the lever arm as a spare part. Never have. Only the magnet itself and the shoes as spare parts. And in this case these were old enough they were LCI made in USA brakes. 8 weeks plus shipping to wait to make an all new standard adjust brake plate for about $80 for the whole plate. So we bought a complete LCI self adjusting one from RV upgrades, took the self adjuster out, put his old manual adjuster in, and put the $40 brake plate on the camper 2 days after we ordered it. The new self adjusting brake plate was out of China and I could see, most all the metal was thinner than the USA LCI one.

I was actually impressed with the older USA LCI brake setup. Just I do not know if they sell it any more on new installs.

OK, this job is done....

OK, I got the parts to fix the stabilizer made. I was trying to do this inexpensively, since a whole new stabilizer isn't all that expensive, but the stabilizer has to be removed and replaced if it isn't fixed - so work.

I bought some helicoil clones and built an install tool ($6 total cost). The insert did not want to fit at first, so I used the belt sander to removed just a bit from the outside to give it some clearance. The 1/2-20 bolt and insert fit very tightly and I was able to get it in and it stayed.

Here is the insert in. The part does not have a lot of thread and stops well before the bottom.

Original and my creation. Dimensions match well, the head of the new bolt is just shorter, so it throws the image off.

Installed...

GREAT!!!! Good Job.

Necessity is the mother of invention. If you wanna get it to work bad enough, there is always a way.

Thanks for sharing.
